You may have completed your preparation or are en route to completion, with your Verbal and Quant section almost done and dusted.

All you have to do is to have a calm composure and take up the exam and give it your best shot.

So what lies ahead?

Even though you might have your hands on the best study material with cutting-edge technology, practice, and prayers, there is one statement that finds its way out of every student’s mouth.

A few last minute tips would be great!

Well, what you ask is what you get.

Though ETS allows you to take up your 91ȱ up to 5 times a year, how does it sound to get the score right on your first attempt?

You would have befriended many techniques and methods to master various sections of your 91ȱ. Though they may be essential and effective, you might have forgotten them over time.

So here are THE LAST MINUTE TIPS that will give you the extra grip to hit your winning shot with ease.

#1.FRIEND ZONE THE FORMAT

It is important to familiarize yourself with the structure of 91ȱ. Because the last thing you would want in your exam are surprises. So here is the syllabus for 91ȱ!91ȱ Last Mi nute Tips - Work Together

There are a total of 6 sections:

  • AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment)
  • 2 Quant sections
  • 2 Verbal sections
  • 1 Experimental section (Verbal or Quant)

The Analytical Writing Assessment measures your ability to think critically and present your ideas in writing.

The Quant Section is basically your high school mathematics.

The Verbal Section analyzes your English 91ȱ vocabulary and grammar skills.

The Experimental Section can be either Verbal or Quant. Since this section is unbiased and unknown to the user, give your best shot in every section.

NOTE:

– You will have a 10-minute break after the first 3 sections. The Experimental section can be in between either of the sections or can even be your first section after AWA.

– It is a section-wise adaptive exam. The Verbal and the Quant section are divided into two parts respectively. Depending on how you answer the first part, the difficulty level of the second part varies.

#2: TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NONE!

91ȱ Last Minute Tips - Time Ticking

So far, you’ve been trying to get your fundamentals right. Now comes the time when you gear yourself up for the D-Day. Most test takers find time management to be a major problem while taking the actual test. That is why it is important for you to train yourself to complete questions within the ideal timeframe.

91ȱ Pro Tip: Reduce the total time of your 91ȱ mock test and practice to 10% of the original time. This trains you to solve problems in lesser time and leaves you with enough time to check your answers.

QUANTITATIVE REASONING

  • Ideally, you can spend up to 2 minutes on a Data Interpretation question, especially the first one.
  • Spend time to understand graphs and plots. So, the questions pertaining to them will only take a meager portion of your time.
  • Questions from Arithmetic and Algebra should ideally be covered in 40 to 60 seconds.
  • Questions from Geometry, that are easy or of medium difficulty level (levels 1, 2, 3) should be answered in a span of 40 to 60 seconds.

91ȱ Tips - Segmentation of 91ȱ Questions

VERBAL REASONING

Similar to its mathematical counterpart, The Verbal section should also be solved in a fixed span of time. This grants you the time to retrace your answers and give a little bit more attention to the Reading Comprehension section. *YAY!*

91ȱ Tips - Verbal Questions

TRACK YOUR TIMELINE

Practice your mock tests with a targeted timeline.

Let us get into the explanation: each section is about 35 minutes, so ideally on your seventh minute, you should have solved your 5th question and so on.

91ȱ Tips - Timelines

91ȱ Pro Tip: 91ȱ exam allows you to mark an answer and return to it later, if needed. So when you feel stuck in some question at any point of time, remember to mark the answer, and move on rather than breaking your head over it.
Keep your cool!

#3: SEARCH,SELECT,SHORTLIST!

When you decide to take up your 91ȱ, search and shortlist universities simultaneously.

This also gives you an insight on the requirements of your dream universities. ETS allows you to send your 91ȱ scores for free to four universities immediately after you take your exam. Why not use the opportunity wisely?

Here’s how you can research and shortlist universities before your 91ȱ.

#4: DECEPTIVE DIAGRAMS ALERT!

With multiple sections comprising various questions, getting your dream score can get hard. So why take a chance? Watch your every step and answer carefully. When a diagram is given, never take it for granted and assume the measurements to be right. All these benefits expired after your math exam in high school.

Let us take an example.

Question: In the given figure, what is the measure of angle QSP?

At first look, you may be quick to conclude 30 degrees. (assuming PS || QR, PSQ = RQS)

However, it is nowhere mentioned in the question that PS || QR. Therefore the solution is,

Unless a note states that a figure is drawn to scale, do NOT solve these problems by estimating sizes by sight or measurement.

#5: SET YOUR BIOLOGICAL CLOCK

Ensure that you tune your body for the 91ȱ. Make sure to take your mock exam exactly at the same time as your actual 91ȱ exam (or make it early, like stated in the tip above). This will make sure that your exam time is not alien to you, and you can maximize your productivity during your test hours.

#6: IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!

Don’t learn any new concept or new word on the day before your exam. Just relax, and have confidence in yourself. Make sure you have a good meal and sleep well before your exam.

321 Scorer, Rutwik says:

Before exam day, do not slog for hours giving tests or memorizing words. Get 7–8 hours of sleep and be confident, no matter what!

Make sure you pack for the exam the night before, especially the essential ID proofs and some protein bars for your 10-minute break!

Research shows that people who rest properly before the day of the exam tend to perform better than their always studious counterparts. With all your preparations coming to an end, lay back, take a break, and relax!

Think of the admission that you have always dreamed of, visualize the multiple evenings you are hoping to spend there, and believe in yourself to get there!

All the best!

If you’re reading this, chances are that your 91ȱ is fast approaching. You’re prepared or maybe not, and your stress levels are making you nervous and ardently looking for the last minute 91ȱ Tips for 91ȱ Prep.

We, at , understand what you’re going through right now.

To help you through this we have come up with a list of things to do before the D-day so that you enter the test center confident and ready.

Sit back, relax, take a deep breath, and read on.

15 Days before your D-Day – 91ȱ Tips:

#1:Have a plan!

How you use your last couple of days can make or break your chances of achieving your dream score. By now, after thorough practice, you know your strengths and your weaknesses very clearly. Design a plan that accommodates your problem areas without neglecting your strengths. For example, if you’re extremely good at Geometry but struggle with RC, dedicate 2-3 hours everyday to practice RC specifically.

Can you score a 320+ in your 91ȱ, in just 20 days? Yes, you can! With the DART Technique used by our student Manish, who got a 331 in his 91ȱ in just 20 days! Download the FREE DART Technique eBook now!

#2: Remember to shortlist universities before 91ȱ

Did you know that you can send your 91ȱ scores to four universities for FREE?

If you wish to send your scores afterwards, you must spend an additional $27 per report. So, be smart and start researching universities. You must narrow them down on the basis of your field of interest and your expected 91ȱ scores. Also, when you have a goal, you tend to perform better.

For example, New York University requires you to get 155 in Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning with a 4.0 in Analytical Writing. Once you know the benchmark you can strive towards prescribed score and keep practicing tests till you achieve such a score on a consistent basis.

#3:Know the format well.

Yes. This is necessary. More than you can imagine!

1 out of 5 students appearing for 91ȱ does not know explicitly the number of sections and time limit for the same. Use the format to your advantage. If you notice you’re spending way too much time on one question, mark it and move on immediately. You can utilize that time to answer other questions that you’re confident about. Get back to these questions once you’ve solved them so that time does not stress you all that much.

Learning to use the resources provided by ETS would also feature in this category. While the jury is still out on the Online Calculator, at AdmitEDGE(…formerly 91ȱEdge), after training 33,000 students, we can safely say that the Online Calculator helps you tackle many questions. For long division, BODMAS based questions etc, save valuable seconds by familiarizing yourself with the calculator.

#4:Let’s not get overconfident!

While over practicing can stress you out, not practicing enough could rob you of your best chance to achieve your scores. It is important to get the right balance. Also, by this point, the tests you do take should be fully adaptive and timed. This will help you recreate the environment of the final day and also give you a feel of how you perform under pressure. But, excessive practice tests a day or two before your 91ȱ is an absolute no-go because it will just stress you out.

#5:Set up your biological clock in accordance to test timings.

Let’s assume you have your scheduled final 91ȱ test on Friday at 3.30pm. You need to prepare your body for such test timings.

Our suggestion, take full-time91ȱ online practice test starting at 3.30, a week or two before the test. This would alter your biological clock and ensure you are at your attentive best during the test.

#6: Practice AWA’s!

Analytical Writing Assessment(AWA) is an integral component of 91ȱ. It consists of two tasks:-

  1. Analyze an Issue Essay – The Issue task presents an opinion on an issue of general interest followed by specific instructions on how to respond to that issue. [How to write an Issue
  2. The Argument task – Evaluating a given argument according to specific instructions.

How can you score 4+ in AWA? Find out how in our expertly compiled ebook on how to score more than 4 in AWA Grab your free copy!

Most students tend to ignore the complexity and importance of the AWA’s. We suggest you practice some sample AWA’s and while taking 91ȱ practice test, do not ignore this section.

Practicing AWA along with your 91ȱ mock test helps you get the feel of the actual 91ȱ and will help you gauge how much time you take to write, your general knowledge, your presence of mind and ability to think under pressure.

If you have any doubts regarding what your AWA score is worth, read this from ETS.

91ȱ Tips for The Day Before Your 91ȱ:

#7:Pocketbook for Revision!

Yes. Do make some notes. Once you’ve relaxed for a while, go over your notes. Notes should include mistakes you’ve maybe repeated more than once. Go over them and remind yourself of your strengths and weaknesses. A practice test is not just to find out your probable projected score. It is also to help you realize what you’re doing wrong and what’s working.

Additionally, have a pocketbook for important formulas and high-frequency 91ȱ words for quick revision.

#8:Sleep well and revisit some of your hobbies!

We cannot stress enough on how important a good night’s sleep before the test is. It helps you relax on the final day and keeps you focused and attentive.

So yes, you need to stop worrying and get some rest!

Clear your mind. One of our own students shared how revisiting some of her hobbies, a day before the test helped her calm down.

Did you know that, 91ȱ (…formerly 91ȱedge) Alumnus, Mayank Shrivastava, used to listen to the same song right before his mock tests and also played the same one before his actual 91ȱ to help calm his exam nerves?

#9:What to carry with you?

Make sure you have a valid photo identification, a confirmation email and a bottle of water. You could carry even your favorite snack bar if you get hungry by the time you reach the break. Also, the test centers are often cold so do dress appropriately. We do not want you to freeze to death while giving the test!

Leave early. You never know what you might come across in traffic. So, it’s always a good idea to leave on time so you can get to the test centre with enough time to spare so that you can calm and collect yourself.

AdmitEDGEPro Tip: Additionally, it is important to remember that you’re not allowed to carry a watch with you into the exam hall. So, make it a habit to practice keeping a track of time using the Timer and not your watch or mobile. This way, even if you feel nervous about a ticking timer on the screen, you’ll accustom yourself to it by continuous practice.

#10:Lastly, it’s not the end of the world!

This point is probably the most important of all. If you didn’t already know, 91ȱ tests can be retaken. So thinking that you need to absolutely ace this test is essentially putting too much pressure on yourself.

Instead be calm and confident. It’s always important to plan ahead. Understand that if you put too much pressure on yourself you will end up making mistakes that you’d generally not make.

In summation, have confidence in what you know. Know your strengths and weaknesses and improve on them.

You’ve got this.

All the very best on your journey to your dream admit!

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) also known as the 91ȱ essay section, is one of the three sections of the 91ȱ test. This section measures your ability to form an opinion, articulate it effectively, and justify your position convincingly. However, your AWA score does not contribute to your total out of 340. It is scored separately out of six.

Is the AWA section really important?

AWA is the first section that you are going to face on the test day. Even though AWA is not included in the 260-340 score range, a low AWA score can be interpreted as an inability to reason critically and express your opinions in a clear, logical manner. Therefore, a good AWA score is crucial to your overall application and has a definite impact on your admissions.

Apart from measuring your ability to think and form opinions, in a smaller scale, the AWA section also tests your language, grammar, and vocabulary.

What does the AWA section consist of?

This section requires you to write two essays – Issue and Argument. You get 30 minutes for each of the essays.

Given below is a brief of the essays.

  • Issue essay:

This will be the first essay assigned to you where the topics will be generic in nature and can have varied opinions to it. This is also because the topic given to you is debatable and can have more than one side to it. You will be provided with a brief paragraph on a generic topic, such as climate change, social governance etc. In this exercise, you must take a stance and justify your opinion with supporting details from the given information and suitable international examples.

Reading leading newspapers like The Times of India, The New York Times, The Hindu etc. every day will be of great help in expressing your opinion effectively, besides strengthening your knowledge. This will help you grasp the style of writing as well as build your awareness on issues worldwide. Using current examples to convey your opinion can earn you serious brownie points with the evaluators.

  • Argument essay:

The Argument essay is the second essay that you are required to write in the AWA section. In an argument essay, you must logically evaluate the arguments made in the question provided. Remember, you are not expected to provide your point of view. You are merely checking for fallacies in another’s point of view on a particular topic. Your task here is to be unbiased and pass your judgment on the validity of the argument.

How to answer an Argument essay in AWA?

Since, the Argument essay forms one-half of the AWA section , it requires specific preparation. Generally, 91ȱ test takers find it difficult to keep their opinion out of the picture and evaluate the argument from a third-person point of view. This is probably one of the gravest errors you could make because that defeats the entire purpose of attempting the exercise. Another common problem among students is that they tend to digress from the topic and don’t quite make their point cogently. So, while writing the Argument essay, you must follow some of these tips:

#1: Brainstorm before you write.

Taking a few minutes before you start writing always works in your favor. During these few minutes, you are expected to evaluate the argument effectively. Think about what is being stated and the possible reasons behind it. Taking this top-down approach will help you get to the logical fallacies that the argument is anchored upon. Then, scrutinize the argument and think about points that could have made the argument stronger.

#2:Make an opening statement!

An ideal Argument essay would start with an introductory paragraph, explaining the various pillars of the argument. You must make sure that your introduction clearly definesthe premise that is set. Don’t provide your opinion on the dispute at hand. Comment on the logic that defends each side. So, clearly state logical fallacies and then proceed to explain it one by one.

#3: Play the Devil’s Advocate.

After identifying the underlying assumptions use the next couple of paragraphs to point out the flaws and while mentioning the possible alternatives as well. This makes your argument seem holistic because you have addressed the points raised in the essay and also refuted them with ample evidence.

At this juncture, having a predefined structure for your essays helps as you can mentally visualize and arrange your points. For example, you can find a flow here:

1

#4:Practice until you can’t get it wrong!

While preparing for 91ȱ, practice sample essays or go through the solved ones. This will teach you how to think logically and help you develop a flow to your writing.

AdmitEDGE Pro Tip: ETS has a pool of topics for both and , including solved examples. You can be rest assured that most of the AWA questions that you will see in your actual 91ȱ will be taken from this pool of topics. So, practicing AWA from ETS is more than enough to score above 3-3.5.

#5: Build your vocabulary

Actively practicing on91ȱ word list while learning during 91ȱ preparation can definitely elevate the quality of writing. But ensure that you only use those words that you are very comfortable with and are fully aware of the meaning and context of usage. Your AWA essay is tests your critical reasoning skills, not your English proficiency.

#6: Flash forward your typing!

Believe it or not, your typing speed plays a huge role in determining your AWA score. You risk losing precious time and putting yourself in a state of panic is you type too slow. Unfortunately, since not many of us are exposed to touch typing, it is quite an awkward battle with the keyboard, come exam day. Therefore, be sure to practice your AWA section on a computer, in a timed setting.

AdmitEDGE Pro Tip: To effectively improve your typing speed and learn touch typing, you can use . With multiple exercises and increasing difficulty levels, this website allows you to type quickly as well as accurately.

The value of a great 91ȱ score to your graduate school applications cannot be underestimated. A 320+ in your 91ȱ is not only your ticket to some of the best schools out there, but in many cases also paves the path to full funding and scholarship opportunities.

So what is the secret to a good 91ȱ score? How can you conquer the 91ȱ and get admitted to your dream school?

The answer to those questions is deceptively simple – good time management skills. Master this, and you will master the 91ȱ. However, of course, this is easier said than done.

Why do students usually have problems managing time?

  1. Lack of preparedness – Unsure of the concepts involved.
  2. Lack of clarity in prioritizing questions – Spending a long time on one question.
  3. Unfamiliar with the format of the test.
  4. Nervous about the timer.

Learning good time management skills is the first and the most important step you must take in your 91ȱ journey. How can you do this? Rather than giving you some general tips, let me explain what you can do section-wise as you encounter them in 91ȱ!

Section 1: Analytical Writing

Section 1: Analytical Writing

The first section in the 91ȱ is always the analytical writing (or AWA) section. Now, a large number of 91ȱ test takers make the grave mistake of skipping their AWA and using the allotted one hour to complete the other sections of the test, since the AWA does not directly affect the final 91ȱ score. However, a good score in your AWA has the ability to boost your applications, so we highly recommend that you do not skip it. The AWA has two essay tasks, the Argument task and the Issue task, both of which are designed to test your critical thinking skills and your ability to develop, articulate, and defend an argument. Of course, it is no mean feat to write an excellent essay in just thirty minutes, but there are ways you can still nail it.

How can you score above 4 in AWA? Get your strategy, tips and the ultimate guide to scoring above 4 in AWA! Download your AWA eBook now!

  1. Take a minute or two to actually plan how you are going to go about writing your essays. This may seem like the very opposite of time management, but you will be surprised to know how many aspirants start their essays without a clear outline and then end up writing vague and irrelevant things.
  2. Write the introduction in the last. Many students waste much time trying to write that perfect introduction. Once you have the body of your essay ready, writing your introduction will be much easier.
  3. Keep it sweet and simple. Don’t try to use words and phrases you aren’t familiar or comfortable with. Simplicity is key. Write sentences that are succinct yet impactful. Be natural, be you.
  4. Don’t overlook the importance of proofreading. When you are writing in a hurry, you may make some grammar or spelling errors. Give yourself a few minutes to proofread and edit.
  5. Make your conclusion powerful by introducing the opposing viewpoint and then refuting it in a couple of sentences. This shows that you acknowledge the other side of the argument, but your argument is the right one.
  6. Most importantly, practice, practice, and practice. Take many 91ȱ mock test as possible to acquaint yourself with the time constraints, and then get them evaluated by a teacher or a 91ȱ instructor.

91ȱ Tips - Score High in AWA

Section 2: Quantitative Reasoning

Section 2: Quantitative Reasoning

The quantitative reasoning section of the test has two sub-sections of twenty questions each. The time allotted is 35 minutes for each section, which roughly means 1.75 minutes for each question. However, some questions could be completed in 30 seconds or less, while others, especially the Discrete Quant and Data Interpretation questions, will require some more work.

Target Time for Quant:

Target an average of 1.5 minutes per question. You can also try allocating time depending on the question type.

For example,

91ȱ Tips - The management Tips 320

Aiming for a 170/170 in 91ȱ Quant? You only have to apply 5 techniques to reach that score! Wondering what these techniques are? They’re all compiled in one eBook by our experts! Download your 91ȱ Quant eBook now!

Expert Tips for Quantitative Reasoning:

  1. A thorough mastery of relevant formulae and equations will make things considerably easy for you. Make sure you have these at your fingertips – it will prove extremely useful when you are in a time crunch.
  2. Be quick, but be precise. Don’t make the mistake of simply skimming over the easy questions without verifying the answer. It is important to balance speed with correctness.
  3. Don’t linger on one question, if you find it difficult. Remember that in the 91ȱ, all the questions carry equal marks. You can always flag the question and go back to it later if you have the time.
  4. It is okay to let go of a couple of questions, but be sure you attempt the questions you do know the answer to, so if push comes to shove, you can skip the ones you had difficulty with.
  5. If you are hesitant about leaving questions unanswered, then simply guess the answers. Wrong answers do not carry negative marks, so even if your guess is wrong, you will at least not be penalized for it.
  6. Read the question properly to understand what is being asked. Some questions may look simple at first glance, but that may not be the case at all. For instance, you could be asked for the “value of the smallest prime factor of y” rather than just the “value of y.” If you cannot come up with a way to solve the question within the first 20 seconds, mark the question and move on!
  7. Put your scratch pad to the best possible use. Rough calculations, tricky formulae, or a complex geometrical figure – whatever it is, writing or drawing it will help you de-clutter your mind.

Section 3: Verbal Reasoning

Section 3:Verbal Reasoning

Similar to the quantitative reasoning section, the Verbal section also consists of two sections of twenty questions each. However, the time allotted is 30 minutes for each section, which leaves you with about 1.5 minutes for each question. Of these forty questions, two will be Reading Comprehensions (or RCs), one short and one long, which will require more time than the other questions, so economize your time judiciously.

Target time for Verbal:

Verbal target time

Expert Tips for Verbal Reasoning:

  1. For 91ȱ verbal practice, try to read the newspaper every day. Circle the words or phrases you are unfamiliar with, and look them up later. This is the easiest and best way to improve your vocabulary.
  2. Tackle the sentence equivalence and text completions first so you can focus on the RCs peacefully.
  3. Make notes and pointers while reading the RCs. Make note of any names, words or dates that catch your eye. Use the analytical reading technique to master RC.
  4. Again, since all questions on the 91ȱ carry the same marks, don’t spend too much of time agonizing over one question. Simply flag it and move on to the next question.
  5. It goes without saying that a good command over 91ȱ vocabulary and grammar rules is indispensable to a great Verbal score, so work on these every day while preparing for the exam.
  6. When in a serious time crunch, guessing is your best option. Try not to leave any question unanswered, but it is okay if you do.

To conclude, time management and rigorous practice are the building blocks of a good 91ȱ score. If you follow these tips and practice every day without fail, there is nothing that can hold you back from a 320+ on your 91ȱ.

The 91ȱ is serious business. It is the master key that unlocks the door to your dreams – Masters’ and beyond.

For the very same reason, it is also a challenging experience because the future you want for yourself depends on it.

If you are reluctant to give 91ȱ again, don’t be. All you need is a plan – a strategy for tackling91ȱ and emerge victoriouslythe second time around.

Should you retake 91ȱ?

If you aren’t sure, this question is probably the only thought in your mind right now. Don’t worry though. A‘good score’ is a relative term. It depends on what universities you are planning to apply to and what programs you want to apply for. From an admission point of view:

If you have scored a 300 or below:
Retaking the 91ȱ is an absolute necessity. The average score for Verbal and Quant is 150 each, making the 50 percentile score 300.

If you have scored between 310 – 320:
Scores between 310 and 320 are accepted if you have a good admission profile with a smashing SOP and LORs that praise you to the moon and back. Having relevant work/research experience including paper publications are a major plus.

If you have scored 320 or above:
Anything above 320 is an obvious guess. You needn’t bother unless you enjoy the thrill of taking exhausting and time-consuming standardized tests!

But again, if you truly believe that your score is not a true reflection of your full potential, by all means, you should take 91ȱ again and redeem yourself.

If you are chasing 320 as a goal in itself, you may wonder why there is such a high stress on scoring above 320.

FUN FACT: According to ETS, the number of 91ȱ test takers between July 2014 and June 2015 was a massive5,76,220.Differentiating yourself in this massive horde of people means you have to be extremely well-qualified to enter, develop and flourish in the field of your choice.

The logic is this:

Higher the 91ȱ score, better the chance of getting into top universities.

Higher the 91ȱ score, better the chance of getting into top universities .

So, essentially maximising your 91ȱ score is a relatively simpler way into your dream university, especially if you are a late bloomer like me who did not know what to pursue until the very end of 3rd year.

Now, let’s get some things straight.Don’t listen to that aunt of yours who says the universities don’t accept scores the second time around.

ETS offers a ScoreSelectoption, that allows you to send the scores you want to 4 universities of your choice. BUT,the catch is this that you cannot pick your best verbal score from one attempt and quant score from another.

Also, you can take the 91ȱ up to 5 times a yeari.e in a continuous 365 day period, once every 21 days.

But before you rush off to book your 91ȱ date, WAIT.

For you to be successful the second time around, you need to first analyze why you couldn’t perform your best in the first place.

Problem #1: Nerves!

This turns out to be the most common reason why 91ȱ aspirants miss out on their big score even though their mock test scores could put others to shame.

Our expert SFA says:

  • Relax. It may be the biggest exam of your life, but it is just an exam after all.
  • You have done all that you can. Last minute preparation will only stress you out.

One day before the D-Day:

  • Listen to music that you love. Treat yourself to the food you love.
  • Don’t learn any new concepts on this day.
  • Give a mock test at the same time as your 91ȱ exam time.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. You will need it the next day.

In the exam:

  • Stay alert. Your presence of mind will help you more than what you have prepared. Pay attention to the questions. Tune out disturbances because there will be people typing frantically into their keyboard, coughing, fidgeting etc.
  • Remember to believe in your preparation and your capability.
  • A common problem people face is that because they know 91ȱ is an adaptive test, as soon as the questions start getting easier, they start panicking and free-fall their way to a disappointing score.
  • Don’t be anxious when the questions get easier. Regroup your mind and focus on the question at hand.
  • Leave questions that you are unsure of for verification so that you can get back to them.

Problem #2: Lack of time/Don’t know how to pace yourself

Many students end up cancelling their scores because they run out of time at the end of the quants section especially. []

Our expert SFA says:

  • a) In a 91ȱ exam, time is both your best friend and worst enemy. Learn how to manage time for amaximum score.
  • Give as many mock tests as you can.
  • Familiarity with the questions as well the practice of solving questions within a stipulated time cannot be taught, but it can be learnt by putting yourself in a 91ȱ setting as often as possible.

91ȱ Pro Tip: Give a mock test every weekend. Don’t spend more than a minute on a question.

Problem #3: Lack of proper prep materials

Without adequate guidance and resources, most 91ȱ aspirants often feel lost while preparing for the exam. They miss out on the opportunity to receive feedback when they land up on the wrong solution.

Our expert SFA says:

Enquire about 91ȱ prep courses that allow you to prepare comfortably whilst also maintaining a cycle of learning and feedback that will help you realize where you go wrong. It could be a conceptual error or a calculation mistake.

91ȱ Pro Tip: Practice similar questions when you receive feedback about where you go wrong in your approach to solving the problem. This will help cement new techniques in your mind.

Problem #4: Lack of clarity in preparation

The 91ȱ has three sections, Quants, Verbal and Analytical Writing. If you don’t know what to prioritize, you are going to lose out on valuable time that you could have spent boosting your weak points and thereby increasing your overall score. This can be clearly seen in those students who have an excellent score in either Quants or Verbal but a passable score in the other.

Our expert SFA says:

  • A Diagnostic Test is a must before you begin preparing for 91ȱ.
  • Don’t follow the ‘One Size Fits All’ option while choosing 91ȱ prep courses. Ask for a study plan that takes into account your strengths and weaknesses but also budgets the time you have to dedicate to this process.
  • So, now that you know where you might have gone wrong the first time, never repeat them again.

Focal Points for your second attempt:

  1. Set a specific target score in your mind.
  2. Book your 91ȱ date at least 1-3 months from the date of preparation depending on how much time you can allot every day.
  3. Take a diagnostic test to find out where you stand and areas you have to improve.
  4. Make a personalized study plan that takes into account your strengths, weakness and also the time available and convenience.
  5. Practice harder ever. The sheer volume of questions you do will ensure that you may already know the questions you see on your test.

That’s it! You are all ready for taking your 91ȱ again.

What is your target 91ȱ score, this time around?

91ȱ is a test of not only your analytical/verbal reasoning capabilities and general aptitude but also a test of how good you are at managing time and dealing with situations under pressure. None of it more evident than 91ȱ Quant. With 40 questions to answer in 70 minutes (barring the chances that the experimental section is also a Quant one).

You need to:

  • Keep your cool. Don’t get too worked up or frustrated when you can’t figure out the answer to one particular question.
  • Have the right judgement to leave it in your first pass, move on to answer the rest of the questions and then come back and solve this question later on.
If you adamantly stick to one question, thinking you have to finish it before moving on to the next, you run the risk of messing up even the portions/sections that you know very well and end up scoring way below your expectations.

We understand that managing time might be difficult especially when you have the pressure of doing well in this exam at the back of your mind. But you need to understand that trying to hurrying up and haste will get you nowhere rather reduce your chance at getting top admits.
You certainly wouldn’t want that to happen, would you?

If the answer is an obvious NO, then check out the following tips that we have collected from personal trainers who have helped over 30,000 students score high in 91ȱ. So, sit back, relax and take notes.

1. Allotting numbers to questions and neat rough work

Try to put question number and do your rough work neatly. Proper rough work is very useful as it can save you a lot of time when you go back to the unanswered question. If your rough work/calculations are spread all over the place, it will be difficult to locate them. Starting the calculations afresh mean you will end up spending more than 2 minutes and which is very unwise.

2. The IGMO method to save time

The IGMO method is usually used by all top performers.
IGMO method stands for Intelligent Guessing and Moving On.IGMO method helps you answer the questions which you’re not so sure of, without wasting too much time. It saves you the time, effort and helps you look at the question from a different perspective later on.

The IGMO method requires you to:

  • Write all the questions in a piece of paper.
  • Calculate the answers to the questions corresponding to the question number.
  • If you are stuck on a question make an intelligent guess and move on
  • Come back to the question later on and solve it.

Remember you shouldn’t spend more than 2 minutes on one question.
You can give an intelligent guess by eliminating the options that totally violate the given conditions. Revisit those questions in the end.

This is what it looks like, when you mark a question and later on come back to answer it. It also shows a list of answered/incomplete questions.

3. Don’t leave questions unanswered

There is no negative marking in the 91ȱ exam, so it is advisable to make a choice by intelligent guesswork rather than leaving a question unanswered. In a multiple choice question with one option to choose from four, your odds of getting it correct are 25%. So you have got nothing to loose. So answer all the questions. That doesn’t mean you will use rock-paper-scissors to decide the fate of the answers!

Our 91ȱ experts have worked out the appropriate amount of time you can spend on the different types of questions. It is listed as below:

4. Spend less time on simple questions

Try to solve the simple questions in less time so that you can spend more time on questions of higher difficulty level and DI questions. Answering the questions that seem simpler will help you dedicate more time to questions that seem harder. Once you have practised hundreds of questions during 91ȱ prep, you will intuitively know which one is difficult and which one is relatively simple. Besides, with ample practice comes this ability of recognizing questions of similar nature that you have solved before. This greatly increases your speed.
The difficulty level of questions vary from 1 to 5. The level 1 and 2 questions can be should be answered in 30-60 seconds.
To give you a brief idea about the difficulty level, here are some questions with their answers:

Question 1
Question Type:Data Comparison
Difficulty Level:Level 2

ABC is a triangle right angled at A. Angle ABC and angle ACB is y° and z°, respectively.

x° is an exterior angle at point B of the triangle.

Quantity A: x
Quantity B: z

Options:
Quantity A is greater
Quantity B is greater
The two quantities are equal
The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

Answer:
Quantity A is greater

Explanation:
Given, ABC is a triangle right angled at A.
Angle ABC and angle ACB is y° and z°, respectively.
=> y + z = 90°
=> z = 90 – y
x° is an exterior angle at point B of the triangle
=> x + y = 180°
=> x = 180 – y
x = 90 + 90 – y
x = 90 + z
=> x > z
=> Quantity A is greater

Question 2
Question Type:Numerical Entry (No options required)
Difficulty Level:Level 3)
Set S contains the set of all non-negative integer n that is divisible by 6. If n < 100, what is the probability that a number chosen at random is divisible by 12?

Answer:
(9/17)

Explanation:
S = {0, 6, 12, 18, …, 96} => n(S) = 17
Set of all numbers that are divisible by 12 = A = {0, 12, 24, 36, …, 96}
=> n(A) = 9 Required probability = 9/17

You should try and complete the exam in 30 minutes, which will allow you to go back and solve the unanswered questions in the last 5 minutes. You could even revise during those 5 minutes.

5. Use the on-screen calculator

It would consume more time for computing manually, so it’s better you take diagnostic tests and use the on-screen calculator as much as possible. Note that the calculator in 91ȱ is a BODMAS calculator which operates a bit different from the normal hardware calculators. Try to perform all the simple calculations in your mind without wasting your time typing in the numbers and waiting for the result.Do get used to this calculator during your practice phase.

You should be familiar with the following functions, depicted:

6.Bewareof the exam situation

Now you shouldunderstandthat exam hall might not be the ideal test taking environment that you thought it would be. The A/C might be working a tad bit slower or faster, hence cooling at different rates which can make you uncomfortable. The invigilators might be a tad bit too harsh. Apart from all that there might be some ambient noises that interrupt your concentration while answering the questions. Make sure that you eat properly before going for the exams. The pantry/food court of the exam center might not be too far to go to in those 5 minutes of break available. You have to keep all these things in mind while you take mock/full-length tests at your home.

7. Take care of the background timer

While you’re taking 91ȱ, you can’t carry your wrist watch along. So, the only way for you to keep track of time would be the time running in the background. Now, most test takers feel a great deal of difficulty in keeping up with the preset timer. So, you should ditch the trusty wrist watch and start using a stop watch to time your mock/full-length adaptive tests.
