If you鈥檙e dreaming about graduate school in the USA, Canada, Australia, or almost any other country in the English-speaking world, the 91热爆 score is a non-negotiable for admissions. Testing competencies across the 91热爆 Verbal section and Quantitative section, a high 91热爆 general test score is capable of opening new doors and easing out the journey to your dream university. In this blog, we discuss the nitty-gritty of the 91热爆 Verbal section, and how to ace it. A stellar 91热爆 Verbal score indicates your ability to speak and understand English well, which is paramount for studying abroad: admission personnel wants to rest assured that you are capable of following and responding to classes without any difficulty. So, ready to score 150+ in 91热爆 Verbal section? Let鈥檚 go!

Syllabus for 91热爆 Verbal Section

First, let鈥檚 try getting a hang of the 91热爆 Verbal syllabus, shall we? The 91热爆 score is split equally between the 91热爆 Verbal section and 91热爆 Quant, which means that each section carries a maximum score of 160 apiece. Out of the forty questions on the Verbal, a significant chunk (around 50%) is taken up by the Reading Comprehension (or RCs), which means that overall, 25% of your 91热爆 score hinges on your performance in the RCs. The other 50% of the 91热爆 Verbal section is based on Text Completion questions (TCs) and sentence equivalence. With the RCs, you are required to read, understand and analyze often complex essays in order to figure out the author鈥檚 intent and viewpoint, infer information (whether implied or not) from the paras and grasp how one part of the essay relates to the others.

In TC, you must provide the missing phrase or word in the passage after taking cognizance of the overall sense and context of the essay, thus exhibiting his 91热爆 vocabulary and ability to comprehend the text at hand.

Lastly, with sentence equivalence, you need to fill in the blanks with the aptest word, and then select a synonymous word from a choice of six. Once again, here too you must be quick with unpacking the overarching context, and then work out which two words are the best suited.

Now, we will move on to discussing the two most important Verbal practice question types: the RC and the TC & SE,  and how you can go about excelling in all the three 91热爆 verbal section.

Reading Comprehension

91热爆 Verbal RC tips
91热爆 Verbal Section – RC tips

Typically, both of the two sections on the Verbal component will have about five RC passages, which could range from short (one paragraph) to long (five paragraphs). The questions per section will be anywhere between one to five, making up a total of ten reading comprehension questions per section and twenty reading comprehension questions in total. Also, do you want to understand how to Get the Central Idea of the Passage in your first read,

There are three types of RC questions:

1) The usual Multiple-Choice questions, where you must pick one right answer choices out of the available five.

2)  Multiple-Choice questions where you will have three answers, and you鈥檒l have to choose every correct answer choice.

3) Select-in-passages, a relatively new type of question, where you have to click on a sentence in the passage to answer the question asked.

Now, take a look at this RC passage below, time yourself,  and attempt to solve the questions that follow:

The grey wolf is also known as the timber wolf or wolf is a mammal of the order Carnivore. Genetic studies indicate the grey wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog and might be its ancestor. Many other grey wolf subspecies have been identified, however, the actual number of subspecies is still open to discussion. Though once abundant over much of North America and areas of Europe and Asia, the grey wolf inhabits a very small portion of its former range because of widespread destruction of its habitat. Gray wolves are highly adaptable and have thrived in forests, deserts, mountains, tundra, and grasslands. They function as social predators and hunt in packs organized according to strict social hierarchies. It was originally believed that this comparatively high level of social organization was related to hunting success, and while this still may be true to a certain extent, emerging theories suggest that the pack has less to do with hunting and more to do with reproductive success.

1. We can understand from the passage that the grey wolf —-.

A) is able to survive in a wide variety of habitats

B) prefers to hunt individually rather than in groups

C) was once found in every continent of the world in great numbers

D) has been proved to be the ancestor of the domestic dog and all its subspecies

E) and the timber wolf are two different species of wolf

2. It is understood from the passage that —-.

A) the number of grey wolf subspecies has been determined with certainty by researchers

B) there are few grey wolf subspecies which continue living today

C) grey wolf subspecies have increased in number in the last decades

D) it is known that many grey wolf subspecies have already become extinct

E) there is no consensus on how many grey wolf subspecies exist

3. According to the passage, in the light of the genetic studies carried out, It has been found out that —-.

A) the domestic dog could have descended from the grey wolf

B) the grey wolf and the domestic dog are the subspecies of a kind of wolf having lived thousands of years ago

C) the dog is believed to be an ancestor of the grey wolf

D) grey wolves live in very large packs

E) grey wolves live only in Europe and Asia today

Answers: A, E, A

How much time did you take to solve this paragraph? Did you find it relatively easy, or did you have to struggle with it? Try and analyze the quality of your answers: in the stipulated time, how many answers did you get right, and how many did you get wrong?

The RC is usually the one section of the 91热爆 test that tends to daunt even the most accomplished students. Why is this the case? Well, here are some of the most common difficulties that candidates face while taking the RC:

1. Poor vocabulary: Of course, you don鈥檛 have to be Shashi Tharoor to ace the 91热爆, but it certainly helps if you organically build your vocabulary over time instead of trying to cram the Manhattan Vocabulary guide three days before the exam. Also to build your vocabulary effectively, check out the WordBot app to learn

2. Being intimidated by the complexity: 91热爆 RCS are deliberately designed to be as complex and esoteric as possible simply to intimidate the candidate on the test day and slow them down. Don鈥檛 fall for this!

3. Not making notes: Students end up not putting their scratchpad to good use. When you鈥檙e reading, make notes of whatever catches your eye, whether they be facts, figures, or statistics. It will certainly come in handy later.

4. Spending too much time: No matter what, a short RC, such as the one above, must be completed in under 3 minutes, while for the longer ones, you mustn鈥檛 take more than 5 minutes. Don鈥檛 spend too much time fixating on anyone’s essay or paragraph.

4. Making assumptions: Reading with a biased mind will cloud your judgments and will mislead you into the wrong answers. Tackle the RCs without bringing in any outside knowledge: inferences are fine, not assumptions.

Finally, here are some tips to ace the RCs:

1. Read widely: Planning to go to grad school next year? We鈥檇 recommend you pick up the daily newspaper, or even your favorite magazine right this second! Yes, we mean it! Organically building your vocabulary is the best way to go about acing the 91热爆 verbal section: start reading widely and actively, note down words that are new or strange, and then commit them to your memory. Further, 91热爆 offers WordBot, a vocabulary-building tool through which you can learn new words in a fun, effective way. Curious? Check it out

2. Try and unpack the tone and intent: Is the author critical? Are they perhaps complementary and laudatory? Or are they just neutral? Figuring out intent from the outset can help you approach the RC passage in a more organized fashion, and will aid in figuring out the meanings of unfamiliar words/phrases. A good idea is to look for descriptions and make a 鈥榟appy face鈥 or 鈥榮ad face鈥 near that paragraph to indicate the mood of the author.

3. The devil is in the details, and this is even more true for the 91热爆 RCs. As we said earlier, these passages are usually packed with all kinds of details designed to slow you down. As a discerning reader and test-taker, it is important to remember that more often than not, these details are simply there to daunt you. Begin by skim-reading the paragraph to grasp the overall summary, and then go back to the details when the answer demands it.

4. Save the most difficult or daunting passage for the last. Remember, all the questions on the 91热爆 verbal section carry the same marks, so reach for the low hanging fruit first. Tackle the passages you find easy and approachable. The RCs are taken from a wide range of subjects- from history to mathematics and ecology, so find the ones you are familiar with.

Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence

91热爆 Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence
91热爆 Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence

The remaining questions on the 91热爆 Verbal section are Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, both of which are similar, yet different. Both are essentially predicated on your ability to unpack context and insert the appropriate words to complete them. With Text Completion, you will be given multiple sentences, or even a paragraph, with up to 3 blanks, which you will then have to fill in. Each blank only has 3 possible answers, but in order to get the question right, you must fill in all 3 of them correctly. To understand about Text Completion and Sentence equivalence in more depth,

Generally, there are three types of 91热爆 TC questions:

1. Single blank: Here, you will be given a single blank, and a choice of five answers, from which you have to pick one. There will be a total of four single blank questions.

2. Double blank: In this one, there will be two blanks to fill, with 3 options for each blank. You can expect a total of four-five double blank questions.

3. Triple blank: With 3 options for each blank, you need to fill in three different blanks to complete the sentence. Watch out for a total of three or four triple blank questions in total.

Take a look at this TC question, and attempt to solve it:

Addiction can be viewed as continued involvement with a substance or activity despite the ____________ associated with it. The substance or activity may have originally provided pleasure and enjoyment. However, over a period of time ____________ the substance or activity is needed to feel normal.

Answers: A, D

How much time did you take to complete this TC exercise? Ideally, you mustn鈥檛 spend more than 1-2 minutes on such a question. Shorter TCs, with just one blank, must be completed in under a minute.

Let鈥檚 now discuss the Sentence Equivalence task, a recent addition to the 91热爆.  Take a look at this question, and attempt to find 2 words that may be used to complete the sentence, and can be used as synonyms.

Sam鈥檚 pyromaniac younger brother had a habit of singeing the tips of his hair; the unpleasant result was a ________ smell that permeated the house

(A)    querulous

(B)    banal

(C)    pithy

(D)    acrid

(E)    pungent

(F)    dull

Burnt hair smells terrible. If you don鈥檛 know this, the key phrase is 鈥渦npleasant result.鈥 You might come up for a word to fit the blank such as 鈥渘asty.鈥 So, the answer is (D) and (E).

Let us now go over some of the difficulties that students face while attempting the Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence sections, and how you can overcome them.

1. Looking for relationships, and not synonyms: this is a classic, oft-repeated mistake that candidates make, where they seek an agreement between words, and not the synonyms of the words: that because of one thing, the other thing is related. Do not fall into this trap: remember, your sole objective is to find synonyms, not cause-and-effect relationships.

2. Not reading the entire sentence: With longer sentences, especially, there is a temptation to stop reading once you figure out the missing word. More often than not, the second part of the sentence contains a complete reversal in tone and intent, so be watchful.

3. Being intimidated by unfamiliar words: In the paragraph above, you may be daunted since you don鈥檛 know the meaning of 鈥榩yromaniac鈥, but that doesn鈥檛 really matter. You are often given major hints (here in the word 鈥榰npleasant鈥), so there is no need to be bogged down by fear of the unknown.

4. Ignoring the context: With 91热爆 TC and SEs, context is king. Understand the tone of the sentence first, figure out if it is negative, positive, or neutral, and then go about figuring out the words to fill in. Ignoring the context is the gravest error you can make.

Now, here are some effective tips to conquer the Text Equivalence and Sentence Completion questions of 91热爆 Verbal Section:

1. Use the process of elimination: Too many choices can be quite deterring, so if possible, try and eliminate the obviously wrong or incompatible answers to make your task a little easier.

2. Figure out the signal words or phrases: As mentioned above, the word 鈥榰npleasant鈥 is the biggest giveaway, and we can easily deduce the synonyms from that word alone.

3. Once you鈥檝e chosen your answers, read the paragraph again and plug in the words you鈥檝e picked to see if it still makes sense. If it doesn鈥檛, you can go back to it if time permits, and edit it accordingly.

4. Another great idea is to insert your own words in the sentence, and then looking through the answers for words that are similar. Start by writing a simple word that you are familiar with, and think fits in well, and then seek out synonyms.

5. Practice, and then practice some more: Work on as many TC and SE questions as possible to get a handle on the style and format of the questions. Who knows, maybe one of your practice questions may just turn up on your official 91热爆 exam!

We hope you found this blog illuminating and helpful, and wish you all the best on your grad school journey.

If I had prepared better for it, I鈥檇 have scored better.鈥
鈥 A cliched statement from most students after an exam?

Well, as Rohan (an MS Aspirant like you) stepped out of the test center after his 91热爆 general test, he said this with a heavy heart.

He aspired to get a Master’s admission in one of the top business schools in the United States, but now he knew his dreams were crushed. A small problematic pit during his 91热爆 prep had turned into a huge roadblock, indefinitely delaying his dreams.

Can you guess what it was?

Well, during his preparation he could see that 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence Questions (TC & SE) were giving him some trouble. Sadly, he didn鈥檛 pay much attention to this. The chief reason for this was that he did not know how to read or practice properly for these sections.听

He just looked at some sample questions and thought they would be enough.

THEY WERE NOT!

But it was not Rohan鈥檚 fault. He didn鈥檛 know where he was going wrong or how he could correct himself.

This is a typical situation that many of the test-takers practicing on their own face.

So, how do you master the 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence questions?

This blog will show you how in three easy steps. And hey, if you want to know more about Verbal Prep, Check this out!

Before we look at the steps, let’s find out who is scoring low in the 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence?

Who scores low in TC & SE?

To answer this, we have to look at the big picture first 鈥 for this, we have to start with 91热爆 Verbal.听

In 91热爆 Verbal, a score of 155 out of 170 is considered good.

US citizen152.6
Non-US citizen147.5
Indian Test Takers145.6

Source: 91热爆 Worldwide Test-Taker Report, July 2013鈥揓une 2018 by ETS.

However, the latest data by ETS clearly shows that Indian test-takers on an average are scoring 145.6 鈥 this score is 10 to 15 points less than what you should be aiming for.听

But which section of test-takers are scoring low? Is it confined to aspirants of a particular graduate level? Technically, a test-taker coming from an engineering, business, or academic background should be scoring high, as they are frequently in touch with the English language. Is that the case?

Let’s find that out too.

Business148.9
Education148.1
Engineering 149.3
Physical Sciences150.8

So, clearly, in the race for getting a high 91热爆 Verbal score, you are not alone. It鈥檚 evident, the problem is not with aspirants in a particular field 鈥 it鈥檚 with everyone.

We wanted to find out WHY!

Why Are Test-Takers Scoring Low (in 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence)?

Student Facilitator & Analyst - 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
Student Facilitator & Analyst

We consulted the 91热爆听Verbal SFAs at 91热爆 to get to the roots of the matter. They guide students throughout their preparation, clear all their doubts and help students get the best scores possible.

With their help, we dug deep and found out the exact problem that every 91热爆 test-taker is facing.

Everyone, regardless of their level of preparation鈥 advanced, intermediate, or beginner鈥攆aces the same hurdles, always.

These are divided broadly into two types:

  1. Not being able to comprehend the question and
  2. Inability to weed out the wrong answers due to weak vocabulary.

(Do you face any other problems other than these? Let us know in the Comments section below.)

These problems are why 91热爆 aspirants are scoring low in 91热爆 Verbal, in general, and in 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence Questions, in particular. Don鈥檛 worry, each of these can be tackled easily 鈥 just by following the 3 steps.

Master 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence 鈥 The 3 Steps!

The Verbal section is considered the hardest in 91热爆 鈥 Indian aspirants see this as the Goliath. If they underestimate it, they get squished; if they fear it, they fail to slay it.

In the two sections of Verbal 鈥 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence questions 鈥 you will have to solve six Text Completion questions and four Sentence Equivalence questions in each.

Don鈥檛 make this mistake:

Students tend to confuse Sentence Equivalence questions of 91热爆 Verbal with the Sentence Completion questions of GMAT.

They are as different as chalk and cheese.

Both sections require you to fill in the blanks. 91热爆 Sentence Equivalence questions will only have one blank while the number of blanks may reach up to three in the Text Completion questions.听

If you鈥檙e asking, how hard can that be,

check out this Text Completion question:

While Knapp’s research (i) __________ the fact that traditional houses are (ii) __________ under assault from the market economy, rapid urbanization, and declining craft skills, it fails to address the scope of (iii) __________ tradition within modernity鈥晅he fusion of which is the right way to progress鈥晅hus portraying a picture of a losing battle.

A. DenigratesD. RestructuredG. Replacing
B. Epitomizes E. RefurbishedH. Incorporating
C. DistortsF. BeleagueredI. Dissociating

Try and solve it on your own first.

Ans: (i) A. denigrates (ii) F. beleaguered (iii) H. incorporating

Did you get it right?

Kudos to you if you did鈥攊f you didn鈥檛, don鈥檛 worry.

Follow the three steps and see how to solve questions like these.

STEP 1. Investigate!

Always Investigate - 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
Always Investigate!

Before solving the question, the first step is to find the clue in the question or statement given to you.

In the given question, pay attention to this phrase:

鈥…the fact that traditional houses are (ii) __________ under assault from the market鈥︹

From the phrase 鈥渦nder assault鈥, we infer that the answers will be 鈥渘egative words鈥. Such words express disagreement or rejection.

Also, look at the following:

鈥…the scope of (iii) __________ tradition within modernity鈥晅he fusion …鈥

The word 鈥渇usion鈥 instructs us to scout for words hinting at 鈥渏辞颈苍颈苍驳鈥 or 鈥渃oming together鈥

These are clues we have to investigate and find out. To obtain clues, look for phrases or words that give the tone of the message. Once you understand where the question is pointing, you are one step closer to the answer.

Great, we now have 鈥淭he Clue鈥濃攍ook for negative words.

Let’s proceed to the next step.

STEP 2. Break them apart & interpret them!

Break & Interpret- 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
Break & Interpret!

Before proceeding, let’s look at the whole question again:

While Knapp’s research (i) __________ the fact that traditional houses are (ii) __________ under assault from the market economy, rapid urbanization, and declining craft skills, it fails to address the scope of (iii) __________ tradition within modernity鈥晅he fusion of which is the right way to progress鈥晅hus portraying a picture of a losing battle.

The statement as a whole is hard to understand.

Roadblock alert! A majority of students fail here owing to the tough language used. Let鈥檚 clear this hurdle.

In the exam, when faced with such a question, break the question into parts and analyze them.听

Let鈥檚 break our question into two parts:

Consider the first two blanks:

鈥淲hile Knapp’s research (i) __________ the fact that traditional houses are (ii) __________ under assault from the market economy, rapid urbanization, and declining craft skills,鈥

Here, the question is talking about a researcher called Knapp. His finding has come under fire due to his opinions about the plight of traditional houses. So our clue is confirmed鈥攚e have to look for 鈥渘egative words鈥

Now concentrate on this part:

鈥…it fails to address the scope of (iii) __________ tradition within modernity鈥晅he fusion of which is the right way to progress鈥晅hus portraying a picture of a losing battle…鈥

Here, we understand that Knapp has failed to look at traditionality and modernity together. This cements our second clue. So by breaking the sentence into two parts, we can comprehend what the question is really about and confirm what type of words we need to find.

Fantastic.

Now that we know what words we need, let’s find out what those words are.

STEP 3. Solve the puzzle!

Every Problem is Solvable - 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
Every Problem is Solvable!

Look at the options with their meanings:

A. denigrates鈥 criticize unfairly
B. epitomizes鈥攂e a perfect example of
C. distorts鈥攇ive a misleading or false account
D. restructured鈥攐rganize differently
E. refurbished鈥攔enovate and redecorate
F. beleaguered鈥攑ut in a very difficult situation
G. replacing鈥攖ake the place of
H. incorporating鈥攊nclude with something
I. dissociating鈥攄isconnect or separate

From the above steps and the meanings of the words, it is crystal clear that听

the answers will be鈥昫enigrates, beleaguered, and incorporating.听

After that, the only thing you have to do is put the words in the right place.

And there you have it. You have just solved one of the hard Text Completion questions in 91热爆 Verbal. For Sentence Equivalence questions,听 you just have to follow the same steps. The only thing you have to remember is鈥昩e very clear in STEP 2, i.e., understand the question. Your whole answer will depend on this. Understanding the context and knowing the meanings of the words is paramount to answering these 91热爆 Verbal questions.

BONUS STEP: Scan & Confirm

Remember, in these types of 91热爆 Verbal questions having multiple blanks鈥昦ll blanks must be filled correctly. There is no partial marking鈥昳t’s All in or Out.

Always read the statements again and check if you have plugged in the answers to confirm its correctness.

Get Every 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence Question Right鈥擶hat to Do?

Now that you know the three steps, you need to start implementing them in your 91热爆 practice tests. But, if you are not trained appropriately, it can be quite tough to implement them鈥攅specially in a time-constrained environment like you will face in the 91热爆 test center. The language used is very difficult and they are designed to throw students off their feet.听

So, how do you train yourself?

The SFAs have the answer, and they have given two easy tips to hone your 91热爆 Verbal skills. Commit them to memory and practice them earnestly

Upgrade Your Vocabulary

This may sound simple, but doing it is quite tough. To upgrade your 91热爆 vocabulary, you need to master the words and not just learn them. Learning the words with the help of visuals is the ideal way. The 鈥淲ordBot鈥 App by 91热爆 is perfect for learning in this manner. It helps you learn important 91热爆 words with visuals and has numerous practice tests that help you evaluate your learning. Learn 20 to 30 words every day. Take practice tests, but not right after learning the words. Take them after a day or two; this will ensure you remember the 91热爆 Verbal words you have learned. If you don鈥檛, revise them again. Revision of the words learned is also very vital for improving your vocabulary.听

This will make sure that you get used to the level of language and vocabulary used in various questions of 91热爆 Verbal.听

In Conclusion

If you utilize these two tips and implement the three steps in your practice and exam, you will gradually see yourself finding the 91热爆 Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence hurdles vanishing.听

One of the most common reasons students fear the 91热爆鈥檚 Verbal Reasoning section, is owing to its use of highly advanced vocabulary. Even those with a good working knowledge of English often find themselves struggling with the kind of words used in the 91热爆鈥檚 notoriously tricky reading comprehension section, as well as with selecting the right option from a list of highly similar answer choices. While problem-solving on the quantitative section can a 听tricky proposition that can be easily tackled with some practice, vocabulary building for the verbal reasoning section is a skill that takes considerably more time to develop for most students in which 91热爆 vocabulary app can help.

Of course, this is partly due to the fact that we鈥檙e not just looking at a few hundred words here. Going by a rough estimate, the 91热爆 vocabulary comprises as many as 3500 words, along with their synonyms & antonyms (especially useful when it comes to answering sentence equivalence and text completion questions). What makes it more challenging is the fact that a large portion of these words comprises those that are relegated to obscure corners of dictionaries and hardly find usage in day-to-day speech.

Now depending on your existing level of command over the English language, you might already be knowing some of them, but if you鈥檙e aiming at a really good score (say, a 320 and above) with a score above 160 on the Verbal section, knowing at least 1000 high priority 91热爆 words is an absolutely non-negotiable requirement!

What are high priority words? Well, according to a detailed scrutiny of 91热爆 verbal questions over the years, we found that certain words had a much higher propensity of appearing on the test than others.

Download our eBOOK on “High Priority 91热爆 Word List

Even a few years ago, vocabulary-building was a pretty long-drawn and tedious process. Students had to painstakingly look up words and their synonyms using a dictionary and thesaurus. Unsurprisingly, it was a process that took months, sometimes, even years!

Learning tools included making flash cards, and looking at the time and again you were sure of each word.

Quite a few of you who have used flash cards earlier might remember how one side had the word or topic you were trying to remember, with a series of clues on the back to help you remember better.

However, though it was arduous and time-taking, it ensured that students remembered what they learned.

Smartphones and the internet have changed all that. Ran into a word you never heard of? Not sure of a word you want to use on an essay? All it takes is a quick Google search! Of course, building your vocabulary for an exam like the 91热爆 is likely to take more than just trawling search engines.

Enter – 91热爆 vocabulary app!

Looking for help with cracking the 91热爆 Verbal Reasoning section and landing your dream admits?

If so, then you have reached the correct blog. There鈥檚 no denying that most Indian test-takers do find the 91热爆 verbal reasoning section pretty tough when compared to the quantitative section. Let鈥檚 look at some quick stats from the ETS鈥檚 July 2012- June 2017 report. The table below lists out the average scores of test takers across countries where the 91热爆 is taken by a large number of students each year.

91热爆 Country wise Test Takers Statistics - 91热爆edge

91热爆 Country wise Test Takers Statistics – 91热爆 (…formerly 91热爆edge)

As you can see, Indian test takers scored the least in the verbal section when compared to the rest. Even though we have a large percentage of the population exposed to English on a daily basis, there exists a gap in learning. While everyday conversations help us improve general fluency a good 91热爆 score requires deeper learning and a strong command over the language. This is partly due to the fact that the 91热爆鈥檚 vocabulary comprises as many as 3500 words, many of which hardly find use in day-to-day speech.

Indian test takers are noted to be naturally good with quants, it鈥檚 preparing for the verbal section that鈥檚 likely to take up the better part of your efforts, as well as act as the determining factor behind your final score. Some of the best universities require a strong 91热爆 Verbal reasoning score and hence the command you have in the universal language to consider your application. Structure of 91热爆 Verbal Reasoning:

The intent of the 91热爆 Verbal reasoning section is to test your ability to comprehend written text, form conclusions and figure out relationships between two or more parts of a sentence. There are two sets of 20 questions each and you get 30 minutes to answer each set.

The three types of questions that come on this section are:

  • Reading Comprehension (RC) – 10 questions/set
  • Text Completion (TC) – 5-6 questions/set
  • Sentence Equivalence (SE) – 4-5 questions/set

The following graph shows the time spent by students on preparing for the 3 topics of the Verbal section. As you can see, students spent most of their time on Reading Comprehension (RC). This makes sense because 10 out of 20 questions, or 50% of this section, are from RC Passages, with Text Completion (TC) and Sentence Equivalence (SE) questions comprising the rest. Vocabulary building is also a very important part of your 91热爆 Verbal reasoning preparation as you鈥檒l need to learn at least 1000 high-priority 91热爆 words.

If you add one English newspaper (The New Yorker, Arts & Letters Daily, or The Atlantic) to your daily schedule, it helps you to learn words in their proper context, enhancing your vocabulary and as a bonus, brushing up your knowledge of current affairs for the AWA section.

The 91热爆 Verbal Section comprises three sections out of which only two would be scored. However, test-takers have no way of determining which of the 3 sections is unscored. Each section has 20 questions and you will be given 30 minutes to answer each (Roughly 1.5 minutes for each question). Most of the questions are multiple-choice questions, where one of the five answers will be correct.

You can begin your preparation by understanding where you stand at the moment. Take a score predicting test here.

Tips and Tricks of the trade:

1. Sentence Equivalence (SE):

These questions could be challenging at moments as you might not be able to think of two words which when placed in a blank will produce sentences that have exactly the same meanings. There can be an approx. of 8 SE questions in the 91热爆 Verbal section. The following are some handy tips to ace Sentence Equivalence questions:

  • As you read the sentence, fill in the word which you feel is most suitable, based on the context.
  • Notice the signal words like and, but, yet, since, thus, although and while. These words will help you to understand the context of the word, and hence, help you make a better choice.
  • Make reasonable guesses of the meanings of unfamiliar words.
  • Consider all the choices even if you are completely sure. You might come across an even more appropriate word.
  • Also, be careful while choosing a word. Many times test takers choose a word which doesn鈥檛 have a synonym in the group. Avoid this mistake at all costs.

Let鈥檚 understand with an example:

While serving in a place marred by bitter conflict, the high degree of alertness that they develop often gets so ingrained in the psyche of some of the serving soldiers that they continue to display the same sense of _________ in civilian life, often to the discomfort of those close to them.

  1. aggression
  2. distrust
  3. discipline
  4. assault
  5. suspicion
  6. restlessness

Correct answers: 听B & E

Scoring conditions:

  • If you select any option other than B & E, you will not get any marks.
  • If you select either B or E and not both, you will not get any marks.
  • If you select both B & E, you will be awarded full marks for the question.

2. Text Completion (TC):

Text completion type questions are a step up from the SE type. You will have to fill two or more blanks in a 5-6 sentence long paragraph. Choices are to be made from the list of words given and marks would be provided only if you choose all the correct options. Like the SE section, no partial marking system is applied.

Following are the tips for TC type questions:

  • Since the questions are lengthy and monotonous, break the text into smaller parts to digest quickly.
  • Understand the tone and context that is being aimed by the sentence. Read it 2-3 times until you grasp the context of the question.
  • Add your own word to fill up the sentence and then select the closest answer to that word.

Let鈥檚 try out an example and apply the tips:

Climate change has already led to the ________ of some bird species in parts of England, where intensively farmed land gives them no room to ______ to warming temperatures. Birds are facing a double-edged sword from climate change and declines in habitat quality as land management is making it harder for cold-associated birds to find cool corners of sites. As biodiversity across England _______________, stopping the destruction of habitat such as hedgerows and old orchards and creating new nature reserves can give opportunities for wildlife to adapt to global warming.

  3. C) conservation 听听听听听听听听听听听听听听F) adapt I) continues to spread

Correct Answer: 听A, F & H

Scoring conditions:

  • If you select any option other than the correct ones, you will not get any marks.
  • If you select the correct option for blank (1) and the wrong option for blanks (2 or 3) or any other combination, you will not get any marks.
  • If you select the correct option for all the blanks, you will be awarded full marks for the question.

3. RC Passages:

One can expect around 5 RC Passages in each section which might vary in their length from 1 to 5 passages. These passages are picked up randomly from Scholarly journals, magazines, works of literature, politics, art, culture, textbooks, biographies, lifestyles, etc. These passages are composed well with complicated structure and advanced vocabulary. These passages make even a good reader break a sweat.

The three types of questions you will be answering are:

  • Multiple Choice questions with one correct option: You will be required to choose from a set of five answers.
  • Multiple Choice questions with more than one correct option: The twist with these types of questions is there is no partial credit provided for the answer. You will have to choose from a set of 3 answers out of which, one/ two/ even all three answers could be true.
  • Select in Passage: The answer to this question lies in the passage. You need to select a sentence in the passage that answers the question.

With 30 minutes dedicated for each section, whilst solving these passages, time is of ultimate value.

Following are a few tips if kept in mind can help you through 91热爆 Verbal Reasoning section:

  • Introduction and Conclusion of long comprehensions: To develop an understanding of long passages, read the introduction and conclusion first. Often these are enough to give you sufficient hints to answer the questions.
  • Keywords and Context: If you find the keyword from the question in the text, read the preceding and succeeding sentences before forming a complete understanding. Then you can understand the intent and context of the author.
  • Save the most complex passage for the last: Know your strengths and weaknesses beforehand. If it takes you a longer duration of time to solve certain passages that talk about say: history. Then skip it and then come back to it after you are done with other ones. This rule is pretty much the same as what applied to your school board exams.
  • Stick to the information provided: Do not get carried away by your own opinions on the matter while answering a critical reasoning question based on the passage. Assuming information can be a self-destructive step while solving RC Passages.
  • Take notes as you read: While going through the text, take notes simultaneously and notice the keywords.
  • Misinterpreting the linking words: Every paragraph of the RC could be a turning point in the reading or it might simply support the preceding paragraph. Develop the understanding of linking words or phrases, like however, in contrast with, but, on the other hand, in addition, yet, in conclusion, and others.
  • Wasting time in comprehending useless information: 听This often happens with long RC passages. If you try to unravel the complexity, you are caught in the trap. Skim through the comprehension once focusing your attention on the first and the last paragraph of the comprehension to understand the intent of the RC. Then, read all the questions and look for the keywords in the body paragraphs. Extracting only the meaningful information from a long passage is a skill that you鈥檒l keep getting better at with practice.
  • Not taking notes: Test takers often don鈥檛 take notes and have to read the passage again. It wastes precious time. Take notes of significant points in the text as you go through RC the very first time.
  • Adding details of your own: Strictly remember that the answers if the questions asked would be available in the RC passage. Do not make assumptions and find the answer.

Let鈥檚 try to apply these tips in the example below:

Through her works, Abril Bolivar aimed to take the average middle-class reader from a state of ennui and indifference to a state of enlightenment. Long before terms such as socialist, feminist, and progressive intellectuals got their modern definitions, Abril championed the cause of the marginalized section of the late 19th-century Bolivian society such as peasants and laborers in her writing.

Since Abril’s rather premature death at 45, her work has acquired greater significance. Her novels have achieved cult status, some are even made into movies, and her short stories were lapped up by schools and colleges as an essential part of their curriculum. Even those with a cursory interest in literature find her novels and short stories appealing. What perhaps has not found as much appreciation is her disquisitions, especially those where she explains her art, her view of the world, and philosophy of life.

Abril, in one of her speeches at a literary conference of Latin American writers, said that she did not subscribe to the “art for art’s sake” school of thought. In light of the themes she chose to write, this would give the facile impression of Abril being a pamphleteer for a cause. However, her language is more of an aesthete than an ideologue. Her writings express the restlessness of an artist and not the certitude of a propagandist.

Based on the information provided in the passage, the author most likely believes Abril’s work to be:

  1. A fine blend of art as well as a social discourse
  2. More biased toward social causes rather than aesthetics
  3. More of cult literature following among movie-makers, students, and those with a cursory interest in literature
  4. A propagandist that would leave the reader in a state of restlessness of an artist
  5. Less interesting as compared to her disquisitions on her art, her view of the world and philosophy of life.

Correct Answer: Option A

Scoring conditions:

  • If you select the incorrect option(s) / sentence, you will not get any marks
  • If you select all correct choices, you will be awarded full marks.

4. Vocabulary

There are more than 3000 91热爆 words that you will have to learn. Though you won鈥檛 ever be directly tested on these words separately, 91热爆 verbal reasoning comprises questions which can be solved only if you are familiar with their meanings. 3 pointers that can lead you to improve your 91热爆 Vocabulary:

Following are some most effective ways to keep in mind during this tenacious process of learning:

1. Choosing the right word-list: English is a vast language and mastering it all with a limited amount of time available might not be feasible. However, there鈥檚 still a lot you can achieve through smart work. Hence, right at the beginning, you need to select the correct list of 91热爆 words. Basing on the frequency of their appearance on the 91热爆, apps like WordBot have a compiled list of words along with their meanings accompanied by picture-guides that can assist your learning.

2. The technique of mastering words: Let鈥檚 discuss exactly how big this list that could get you through 91热爆 verbal reasoning is. There are around 3000 91热爆 words that you need to learn while preparing for the verbal. Mugging is not the solution for a list this large, at least not for the majority of them.

    1. Redefine Definitions: The dictionary definition of the word might not be that interesting and you might find it hard to keep those words in mind. So, reinterpret the definition given by the dictionary in your own words, you will realize that learning a definition written by you is comparatively easy to learn.
    2. Use the words in your daily life: Once you have learned a few words, try to add them to your daily conversations. As you carry your flashcards, think of the scenarios where you can use those words. Make sentences with them; say them out loud so that you familiarize yourself with the tone of that word.
    3. Keep a list:听Type out the unfamiliar words several times a day. Scribble it on the back of your notebook, text that word to someone; or write an essay containing that word.
    4. Revise and Repeat: Remembering 1000s of words can be challenging and you will start forgetting the words you learned first as time passes by, so remember to revisit the words from time to time to keep them in your memory.

3. Use apps: There are several apps that are designed to make this boring process into some type of game. They help you keep track of your overall development.

Apps like Wordbot from 91热爆 (formerly 91热爆edge) are premeditated to provide you with assistance throughout the process of your learning. They not only operate with a list but also test you from time to time keeping your memory intact throughout the months of your preparation.

Some other tips for prepping for 91热爆 Verbal Reasoning:

  • Knowing where you stand: Take a practice test and know where you stand at the moment. It will help you find your strengths and weaknesses and the degree of improvement that you actually require. It can be helpful in deciding how rigorously you need to address your existing vocabulary. Since 91热爆 vocabulary comprises words that aren鈥檛 used in your day to day life, even if you realize you have a great deal of learning to do, don鈥檛 lose hope and start today.
  • Start a habit of reading editorials: Newspapers like the Hindustan Times, The Economist has great articles in their editorials which can help you improve your vocabulary as well as keep you updated with the current events. It will help you with the other sections of your 91热爆 Test as well. If you can, develop a habit of reading good books. 听There is no better way of learning words than seeing them in their very own context.
  • Don鈥檛 focus only on Vocabulary: It will amount to at max 50% of your score but the rest would come from your comprehending ability, your capability of understanding the context, and of course, reading speed. So prepare and practice RCs well.
  • Assess yourself: Before going for the actual test, take practice tests and mock tests to get a better understanding of your state of preparation as well as the 91热爆 time structure. These texts are important as the way you will be giving your exams would be entirely different from how you speak or write English in your daily life.

The 91热爆 Verbal section may intimidate you, and what might be even more intimidating is its highly advanced vocabulary. While text completion type questions may seem like innocuous fill-in-the-blank type problems, one must note that the options can often be highly confusing. Not knowing the right meanings of the words or their synonyms and antonyms might lead you to pick the wrong answer choice(s). While the single blank questions are comparatively easy to maneuver, questions with multiple blanks can indeed be tricky – more so because there is no concept of partial marking on the 91热爆. You get awarded marks for that question only if you attempt the correct answers for each blank. So is there an effective guide to simplifying 91热爆 text completion type questions? You bet there is! Read on to find out more about this section, the different types of questions you鈥檒l be facing and how to get them right – every single time!

All about 91热爆 Text Completion:

The 91热爆 text completion section assesses how you interpret and evaluate information presented to you based on your reasoning skills. They do this by omitting critical words from short passages which you need to fill up by using the remaining information in the passage as a basis to create a logical and meaningful whole.

A typical 91热爆 text completion question features a sentence or short passage where one, two or three words are left blank. Your task is to pick the right word from the choices given and make the passage meaningful.

You can expect approximately 12 text-completion questions in total with roughly 6 text-completion questions in each sub-section of the 91热爆 Verbal.

91热爆 text-completion questions can be of three types:

  • Single-blank: These questions have a single blank to be filled up. For sentences or passages with a single blank, you will have to choose the right option from five given words. You can expect four single blank questions in total (2 per section)
  • Double-blank: Double blank text completion questions have two blanks to be filled up. You will have to choose the right answer from three given options. You may expect around four to five double blank questions. (2-3 per section)
  • Triple-blank: Triple blank text completion passages have three blanks which need to be filled. Three options will be given from which you will have to pick up the right word and you can expect roughly three to four triple blank questions. (1-2 per section)

It is important for you to remember that you have to choose the right answer for every blank for questions with either a double blank or a triple blank to earn a credit. You do not earn any credit for partially correct answers. Also, a double and a triple blank question counts as a single question even though the question passage has multiple blanks.

Tips to crack 91热爆 Text Completion:

One of the most common mistakes candidates make on this section is to focus only on vocabulary building. Now don鈥檛 get me wrong here – a great vocabulary is, in fact, one of the pillars of your 91热爆 verbal prep; but it鈥檚 not the only one! There鈥檚 quite a lot of critical thinking involved in answering Text Completion questions with respect to which word (or words) make the passage meaningful and rational, i.e., contextual usage of words.

Let us consider the following examples for a better understanding:

91热爆 Text Completion: example 3

91热爆 Text Completion: example 3

Now, the tendency of test takers is to link the first two blanks and then find out the right word for the third blank. So, you might think that because the author is so 鈥榲erbose鈥 that his work becomes 鈥榠naccessible鈥. And then, therefore you quickly link that to 鈥榣ack of coherence and lucidity鈥. However, this is the point where you need to use your critical thinking and reasoning skills.

If you notice that there is a 鈥榖ut鈥 in the middle of the sentence, that鈥檚 your clue that it鈥檚 a turning point for the sentence, and the second part of the sentence is likely to take on a different tone from the first. Also, the term 鈥榢nowledgeable critics鈥 appear and you need to think about why and what critics would point out in the author鈥檚 work. Hence, if you logically analyze this sentence, you will find that because of the author鈥檚 鈥榲erbosity鈥 people, in general, find his work 鈥榠naccessible鈥, but critics, because they are experts and know the topic really well, find this to be the most 鈥榮uccinct鈥 piece of work in the field鈥.

Thus, the answer to this question goes like this:

Because of the author鈥檚 (i) verbosity, many readers consider his latest work (ii) inaccessible but, in reality, as many knowledgeable critics point out the piece (iii) is the most succinct on the subject.

Therefore, do not jump into conclusions and make the wrong choices! But what must you do to identify the correct answers? Well, there are some tips and tricks to master text completion questions and handle them like a pro.

Tip 1- Break the sentence:

Text completions passages can be lengthy and are difficult to assimilate at one go. You might as well get lost in the maze of words by looking at the whole passage and attempting to answer the question. 听One of the ways to handle a text completion question is to break the text into parts in a way that is easy for you to understand. So, before you consider any of the choices given, break the passage into smaller, easily understandable parts and consider each part at a time. You will then find it easy to link these smaller parts to get the bigger picture.

In order to understand this, let us consider an example:

91热爆 Text Completion: example 2 (Break the sentence)

91热爆 Text Completion: example 2 (Break the sentence)

In order to solve this, break this passage into smaller parts in your own words. Doing so will make it easier for you to find the right word for each blank.

(i) Let鈥檚 take a look at the first part of the sentence:

鈥淔or centuries now, cancer has (i) ___________ scientists.鈥

Since confused would be the right word here, look for the option that is closest in meaning to confused, which in this case is confounded.

Great! We now know the answer to one of the blanks!

(ii) Let鈥檚 move on to the second part of the passage now:

鈥淯nlike most microbes, cancer can spread to the (ii) __________ organism.鈥

If 鈥榳hole鈥 is the word you have in mind, you鈥檙e absolutely on the right track! Now, look for the option that is closest in meaning to 鈥榳hole鈥. This is an easy one – entire!

(iii) Now for the 3rd and final part of the passage:

鈥渕aking it very difficult for scientists to find a way to attack the cancer without (iii) _________ any of the affected organs.鈥

What words are you thinking of? Damaging? Harming? Destroying? Locate the 91热爆 word for that and you鈥檒l have successfully answered all three blanks correctly and earned your score

Download our eBOOK on “How to score 160+ in 91热爆 Verbal by Learning 91热爆 Words?

In this case, the word you鈥檙e looking for is 鈥榠mpairing鈥 which essentially means the same as harming or damaging. Hence, here鈥檚 what the completed passage should look like:

For centuries now, cancer has (i) confounded scientists. Unlike most microbes, cancer can spread to the (ii) entire organism, making it very difficult for scientists to find a way to attack the cancer without (iii) impairing the functions of any of the affected organs.

If you would have tried to choose the right words without breaking down the sentence into smaller parts, you were very likely to choose 鈥榠ntrigued鈥 instead of 鈥榗onfounded鈥 for the first blank. The word ‘intrigued鈥 means 鈥榯o arouse curiosity or to fascinate鈥 and considering that the passage talks about scientists finding it difficult to figure out how to attack the cancer cells, the word 鈥榗onfounded鈥 fits the blank better. The word 鈥榗orrupted鈥 means 鈥榯o act dishonestly for personal or monetary gains鈥. This word does not fit the blank because cancer being a disease cannot corrupt scientists.

On the same lines, you were very likely to choose 鈥榚radicating鈥 for the third blank which means to destroy completely. 听However, we need to understand that the passage talks about the scientists trying to eliminate cancer and not the organs. The word 鈥榚radicating鈥 therefore, changes the context of the passage completely. The right word choice is, therefore, 鈥榠mpairing鈥, which translates to 鈥榟aving an adverse effect鈥 on the organs.

Tip2- Check for word use and idiom problems:

91热爆 Text Completion uses words as well as idioms to express ideas which may sound and appear very tricky. You must make sure you understand how ideas have been expressed as phrases and eliminate the options or choices that result in the sentence appearing puzzling or awkward. Read the complete sentence and if it sounds wrong to your ear then maybe it is not the right answer.

Let us consider an example:

91热爆 Text Completion: example 1

91热爆 Text Completion: example 1

In the case of the second blank, we can take a hint from the last line of the passage 鈥sometimes the petty differences end up fatally鈥. This indicates that even though the social bonding in crows, bees, and humans is strong, sometimes they also quarrel amongst themselves and this sometimes can lead to loss of life. The word 鈥榗riticism鈥 means 鈥榚xpression of disapproval鈥 which does not lead to any fatalistic outcome and therefore does not fit the bill. The answer choice 鈥榩rejudice鈥 means 鈥榩reconceived notion not based on any reason鈥. Since the comparison is made between humans and animals, this word will not fit because prejudices exist only in humans and not in animals. This leads us to the answer 鈥quibble鈥 which refers to an argument. So, the passage with the correct words goes like this: In this passage, the phrase 鈥
creatures who bond, such as the crows and bees, humans too have 听…鈥 provides a vital clue regarding social behavior of these species for the first blank. The word 鈥榚nthusiastic鈥 means showing interest and does not really relate to social behavior. Also, the other option 鈥榳arm-blooded鈥 refers to birds and mammals and therefore does not fit the context, as the passage includes bees, too. This leads us to answer choice 鈥gregarious鈥 which means being sociable.

Download our eBOOK on “Learn 91热爆 Words with TV Series & Cartoons Series

Humans too, like all (i) gregarious creatures who bond together, such as the crows and bees, have their (ii) quibbles. Sometimes the petty differences end up fatally.

Tip 3- Consider all the answer choices:

Always read the entire passage and don鈥檛 choose options in haste. Most of the times the difference between the options might be very subtle and you might end up choosing a weaker option when a stronger one is already provided.

91热爆 Text Completion: example

91热爆 Text Completion: example

Now, in the options鈥榠nsincere鈥, 鈥榝acetious鈥, and 鈥榤istaken鈥 all indicate a general sense of falseness; however, it is the word insincere which directly relates with the idea of trust and belief. If you examine this sentence carefully, then three keywords emerge from the passage which provides us a clue about the answer. The words 鈥榮ince鈥, 鈥榖elieved鈥 and 鈥榬efused鈥 give us an idea that because of her belief, she refused to think that he might be lying or something that is false.

So, we hope these examples helped you to understand how critical thinking skills paired with knowledge of vocabulary can go a long way in selecting the right answer choice. By practicing text completion questions using these techniques, you can easily achieve a 160+ in the 91热爆鈥檚 Verbal section.

91热爆 Text Completion versus Sentence Equivalence:

Text completion and sentence equivalence are both types of fill-in-the-blank questions. However, apart from that similarity, there are significant differences between the two. Let us have a look at them:

Aliens. Fascinating, yet scary!

Anything that creeps into the unknown arena scares us. Thoughts like, 鈥淲hat do they look like?鈥, 鈥淚f we ever meet them, are they going to kill us?鈥, 鈥淗ow would we fight them?鈥 are common amongst scientists and civilians alike.

This is precisely how non-native speakers of English perceive the 91热爆 Verbal section!

An incomplete understanding of the conceptual depths of the language is what makes students doubt their abilities to conquer this section.

The majority of 91热爆 test takers come from an engineering or science background and naturally find the Quant section very easy to handle.

However, it鈥檚 the verbal reasoning section that has gained a notorious repute among test takers owing to its complicated RC passages, confusing text completion questions and difficult vocabulary.

Fear not, though. Going through this comprehensive guide will help take students from Ground 0 of 91热爆 Verbal Preparation to being fully equipped to target a score of 160 and above!

What exactly is the 91热爆 Verbal Section?

The Verbal Reasoning measure assesses your ability to logically understand and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyzing relationships among parts of sentences, words, and concepts.

About half of the Verbal section comprises questions from Reading Comprehension, requiring you to read passages and answer questions based on those. The other half requires you to read, interpret and complete existing sentences, groups of sentences or paragraphs. [source: ETS]

What is a good 91热爆 Verbal score?

The truth is, the universities don鈥檛 look at your total 91热爆 score, but your individual scores obtained in the 91热爆 sections, Verbal, Quant, and even the AWA section – though it鈥檚 marked separately. Hence, how good your score is, depends on these factors:

  • Your 91热爆 Verbal score & Quants percentile scores
  • The 91热爆 score required for that program/university.

Let鈥檚 talk percentiles. Percentiles are a measure of what percentage of other 91热爆 takers have a score lower than you. Hence, the higher your percentile, the better your chances!

ETS, the organization that conducts the 91热爆 calculates percentiles separately for Verbal, Quant, and AWA.

Take a look at the individual score percentiles below (source: ETS)

Individual Score Percentiles - Subjectwise

Individual Score Percentiles – Subjectwise

Decoding the Data – What matters more for you?

Broadly speaking you need a higher score on the section more closely related to your field. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Courses like Computer Science, in your case, place more emphasis on a higher Quants percentile whereas Ph.D. courses in thesis-based subjects often require a higher verbal score!

Noticed how the Verbal percentiles are higher than Quant percentiles throughout?

The difference between verbal and quants scores is especially more pronounced in countries such as India where more students score better in the Quants section owing to a higher priority given to developing mathematical skills coupled with the engineering background that most test-takers share! Thus, to get a higher Quants percentile, you鈥檇 need a higher Quants score than Verbal!

What is Good Percentile?

Roughly speaking, any score above the 75% mark is considered good, with a percentile above 85% considered excellent!

This means that a score of 157 or more in the Verbal Reasoning section is generally considered good.

You can get a pretty clear idea regarding the kind of score you must aim for by looking at the average score of the admitted applicants in some top universities in the US like:

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Cambridge, MA

Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge, MA (Subjectwise Score)

What is the sectional breakdown?

You have 1 min 30 seconds to attempt each question, on an average.

91热爆 sectional breakdown

91热爆 sectional breakdown

What is the question format?

91热爆 Question Format

91热爆 Question Format

There is no set pattern or sequence. Questions in different formats are intermingled rather than grouped separately. The number of questions in each format also varies.

For a rough idea, take a look at the question distribution pattern above – a reasonably accurate breakdown of 91热爆 verbal reasoning questions as seen in previous exams.

Approximately 50%, or 10 out of 20 questions in each of the 2 sections are from Reading Comprehension passages, with Sentence 听Equivalence and Text Completion questions comprising the rest.

Note that some questions have only one correct answer, whereas others have multiple correct answers. In case of questions that have multiple correct answers, students are only awarded marks if they attempt all the correct options as the 91热爆 does not have any part-marking system.

A fair idea of every question format:

Reading Comprehension

These questions are designed to test a wide range of abilities that are required in order to read and understand the kinds of prose commonly encountered in graduate school. Those abilities include:

  • Understanding the meaning of individual words and sentences
  • Understanding the meaning of paragraphs and larger bodies of text
  • Distinguishing between minor and major points
  • Summarizing a passage
  • Drawing conclusions from the information provided
  • Reasoning from incomplete data to infer missing information
  • Understanding the structure of a text in terms of how the parts relate to one another
  • Identifying the author’s assumptions and perspective
  • Analyzing text and reaching conclusions about it
  • Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of a position
  • Developing and considering alternative explanations [source: ETS]

Text Completion

Skilled readers do not simply absorb the information presented on the page; instead, they maintain a constant attitude of interpretation and evaluation, reasoning from what they have read so far to create a picture of the whole and revising that picture as they go.

Text Completion questions test this ability by omitting crucial words from short passages and asking the test taker to use the remaining information in the passage as a basis for selecting words or short phrases to fill the blanks and create a coherent, meaningful whole. [source: ETS]

Sentence Equivalence

Like Text Completion questions, Sentence Equivalence questions test the ability to reach a conclusion about how a passage should be completed on the basis of partial information, but to a greater extent, they focus on the meaning of the completed whole sentence.

Sentence Equivalence questions consist of a single sentence with just one blank, and they ask you to find two choices that lead to a complete, coherent sentence while producing sentences that mean the same thing. [source: ETS]

Common 91热爆 Verbal Mistakes (and how to avoid them)

91热爆 RC

  • Reading the passage completely before reading the questions

Reading an entire 91热爆 passage before you even look at the questions is a mistake because the questions that follow a passage will not cover every aspect of the passage.
To focus on the correct parts of the passage, it鈥檚 better to treat the questions as a study guide for the passage. The subjects of the question set are a map of the essential things you should be looking for in the reading.

The MUST remember rules to ace this format-

  • If the passage is long, the best strategy would be to skim it to get a hold of its core ideas. And then read the questions so you鈥檇 know which part of a particular para delivers the answer to it.
  • If the passage is short enough, you can skip reading/skimming it altogether, jump straight to the questions and find answers to the same.
  • Not actively engaging with the text

Reading and understanding a piece of text requires far more than a passive understanding of the words and sentences it contains; it requires active engagement with the text, asking questions, formulating and evaluating hypotheses and reflecting on the relationship of the particular passage to other passages and information. [source: ETS]

1. Think critically & analyze the text.

2. Look at the questions & try to understand the context in which they need to be answered.

3. Immerse yourself in the text. Become one with it.

91热爆 Text Completion

Do not merely try to consider each possible combination of answers; doing so will take too long and is open to error.

Instead, try to analyze the passage in the following way:

  • Read through the passage to get an overall sense of it.
  • Identify words or phrases that seem particularly significant, either because they emphasize the structure of the passage (words like although or moreover) or because they are central to understanding what the passage is about.
  • Try to fill in the blanks with words or phrases that seem to complete the sentence, then see if similar words are offered among the answer choices.
  • Do not assume that the first blank is the one that should be filled first; perhaps one of the other blanks is easier to fill first. Select your choice for that blank, and then see whether you can complete another blank. If none of the choices for the other blank seem to make sense, go back and reconsider your first selection.
  • When you have made your selection for each blank, check to make sure the passage is logically, grammatically and stylistically coherent. [source: ETS]

91热爆 Sentence Equivalence

Do not simply look among the answer choices for two words that mean the same thing!
This can be misleading for two reasons:

1. The answer choices may contain pairs of words that mean the same thing but do not fit coherently into the sentence.

2. 听The pair of words that do constitute the correct answer may not mean exactly the same thing, since all that matters is that the resultant sentences mean the same thing.

  • Read the sentence to get an overall sense of it.
  • Identify words or phrases that seem particularly significant, either because they emphasize the structure of the sentence (words like although or moreover) or because they are central to understanding what the sentence is about.
  • Try to fill in the blank with a word that seems appropriate to you and then see if two similar words are offered among the answer choices.

If you find some word that is similar to what you are expecting but cannot find a second one, do not become fixated on your interpretation; instead, see whether there are other words among the answer choices that can be used to fill the blank coherently.
  • When you have selected your pair of answer choices, check to make sure that each one produces a sentence that is logically, grammatically and stylistically coherent, and that the two sentences mean the same thing. [source: ETS]

Read. Read A LOT!

Read everything you can possibly get your hands on – journals, magazines, newspapers, books, novels, comics & blogs.

The more you read:

1. The more you鈥檒l get to know the difference between good writing & bad writing
2. The better your vocabulary suit will get without you having to cram words separately
3. You鈥檒l automatically become knowledgeable in the context in which words are used & that will become a part of your subconscious thought process.

Don鈥檛 just read, read ACTIVELY!

Get immersed in the text you read. Actively participate in an internal discussion with your own self about what the author might really be wanting to convey. Rectify it, think about it, make it better in your head.

Perceive the text. Weigh it. Consider it. Improve it. Make it your own!

This will better your critical thinking ability.

Have a constant dialogue with yourself in English. Attack and defend yourself on your arguments from an unbiased perspective. This will bring a smooth flow to your thoughts, and you鈥檒l learn how to think and express in English exactly how you do in your native language.

Learn by doing what you love

Knowing these will help immensely with making you comfortable with the language!

Use Twitter

As opposed to keeping a journal or starting a blog, the beauty of Twitter is that it provides you an ability to express yourself, but with a character limit.

Thus, you have no option but to come up with words that express more. This will heighten your vocabulary both in terms of quantity as well as its quality.

Use it to comment on the news, blogs you read, share your preparation journey or just some creative thoughts of your own.

91热爆 Words - 91热爆 Word Learning

Dear 91热爆 Aspirant,

I know you.

You鈥檙e the person who鈥檚 tried everything to tame this beast.

Writing down while studying words.
Breaking it up into root words.
Saying it loud and almost coercing your mind to remember them.

Sadly, none of it seems to work, does it?

At least in remembering those pesky 91热爆 words for a long time!

One such student like you was Akshaye.AP Akshaye - Mastered 91热爆 Words!

He decided to prepare for 91热爆 soon after graduating to give himself enough time to brush up his skills.

As soon as he went through a few sample questions, Akshaye realized that 91热爆 Verbal was going to be his Achilles Heel. And, the best way to tackle 91热爆 Verbal, particularly Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence sections is by developing a strong vocabulary.

However, after a quick glance at the long list, he realized his worst fears had come true most of the 91热爆 words were alien to him.

Many people would let their worries get the better of them, but Akshaye was cut from a different cloth. He followed a study schedule where he was advised to master 20 91热爆 words per day, write them down in a diary, and revise them on the weekends.

In just 2 months, he challenged himself to master 91热爆 Vocabulary and was it worth it?

Come exam day, Akshaye scored a whopping 334 in 91热爆 with an impressive 165 in Verbal.

WHAT EXPERT TIPS HELPED AKSHAYE LEARN & REMEMBER 91热爆 WORDS?

#1: 3D Learning

How do you go about learning 91热爆 words?

When you take up a word, do you look at the meaning, understand it, and then look at the usage?

If you do that, then that鈥檚 great! But, you still haven鈥檛 learned the word.

There are actually a couple of more stages than that.

91热爆 Word Learning

Want to learn 91热爆 words quickly and easily? Learn 91热爆 words with your favorite cartoons and TV shows! Download your FREE 91热爆 Words eBook now!

Stage 1: Knowing a Word

At this stage, you break down a word into its meaning, parts of speech, and usage. For example, take the word “chicanery”

Meaning: Using tricks or deception to get something done

Parts of Speech: Since this word is used to identify a behavior/practice, it is classified as a noun.

Usage: He was too naive to understand his partner鈥檚 chicanery and lost all his money.

Stage 2: Understanding a Word

At this stage, it is important to be able to explain the meaning of the word in your own words and then categorize it.

Let鈥檚 try doing that for the word 鈥渃hicanery.” Using immoral or unethical practices to achieve a goal is chicanery.

To categorize the word, answer the following questions:

  1. Is the word positive or negative?
  2. Does it describe an emotion or a behavior?
(Most words will fall into this category and are the easiest to remember because of the direct association.)
  3. Are there any simpler words that mean the same?

For Chicanery, you鈥檒l be able to easily categorize it as:

  1. It is a negative word.
  2. It describes a behavior.
  3. Trickery & Deception are similar to Chicanery, but simpler.

Stage 3: Applying a Word

At this stage, you start inducting the word into your own vocabulary by using the word in speaking or writing.

Go on, try applying the word Chicanery!

Here鈥檚 our example:

His political career was fueled by black money and chicanery to win votes.

Once you learn a word like this, do you think you would remember it better than you did before?

#2: Picture Perfect It

Think about this.

When you watch your favorite movie (mine is Shahrukh Khan’s, of course) and try to recall your favorite scene, what do you see when you close your eyes?

The actor鈥檚 face, expressions, and the setting?听Or, do you remember the subtitles or dialogue?

This is exactly because Visual Memory activates the “ROM region of the brain” that is 65% more long-lasting than any other form of memory.

Similarly, exercising your visual memory for learning 91热爆 words can help you remember what you learn for longer!

For example, consider this 91热爆 word and image:

What are some of the first words you can associate with this picture?

Stubborn Horse

Difficult? Stubborn? Unrelenting?

Now, guess what the meaning of the word Obdurate is?

Obdurate is used to describe a person who is being stubborn with the intention of stalling progress.

So easy, right?

At 91热爆, we have collated 3000+ 91热爆 words with relevant and quirky pictures for remembering.

#3: Five-in-One Method

This is a quick and easy tip that ensures you learn multiple 91热爆 words at once and this is best used as a revision method.听The moment you learn 5 91热爆 words, stop.

Construct a sentence or paragraph that uses all of the above words & is still meaningful.

This will help you correlate words, understand the meaning with context, and remember the words for long.

91热爆 Pro Tip: Use the name of a person that reminds you most of that particular emotion/behavior described by the 91热爆 word to cement your learning.

For example, let鈥檚 say you learned the following words:听听Castigate, Condone, Disparage.

Anjali (the person that reminds you of this word) was castigated by her father for her disparaging remarks against the school principal. He told her firmly that he would not condone this kind of behavior.

#4: Get to the Root of Things!

Modern English as a language has evolved over many centuries with strong influences from Greek and Latin.

Therefore, many words that are apparently different from one another in meaning actually have common root words that mean the same thing.

For example, consider the 91热爆 word, “misanthrope.”

It is made up of two Greek root words 鈥 鈥渕isein鈥 & 鈥渁nthropos.鈥

91热爆 Words - Break Words to Master

Therefore, the word misanthrope means someone who dislikes mankind and avoids people.

These are just some of the many tips that 35,000+ students have used to achieve their dream 91热爆 score!

Expert Tips to save time on 91热爆 Reading Comprehensions

Preparing for 91热爆?听If the answer is yes, then you would probably nod your head in agreement when I state 91热爆 Reading Comprehension is tough. The Verbal section opens the assault with a strong army of Reading Comprehension (RC) exercises leading the attack. RC can play mind games and can bring down even the strongest of competitors.

Lack of proper learning and practice in RC can spoil the time you need for the other sections and leave you hanging in terms of your target score.

Rakshit Rana was an engineering student who spent a major chunk of his time in engineering classes and labs. After a tiring day at college, he was relieved to get back home to take the nap he earned. His smile was quickly replaced by frustration when he realized his Verbal preparation was pending.

Being an engineering student, Rakshit was able to cope fairly well with the Quant section, but found it impossible to concentrate on the Verbal part.

He performed poorly in his practice tests and scored only 148 in Verbal and spent most of his time in the RC section.

To achieve his target score, Rakshit had to overcome his RC hurdles. His Verbal trainer chalked out a study plan, provided him with comprehensive materials, empowered him with various techniques, and enabled him solve a lot of Reading Comprehension questions.

With a 15-point score boost, he ended up scoring a whopping 163 in his Verbal and a total of 326!

Can some of the tips that helped Rakshit help you conquer 91热爆 Verbal too?

Expert Tips That Helped Rakshit Conquer His Verbal Trouble

#1: Sail Stranger Tides

Reading on subjects related to your field of interest is good. But to get 91热爆-ready, you have to break out of your comfort zone, start experimenting, and step into unknown territories of literary interests.

This helps you to sharpen your reading skills and enables you to pick out the essentials from any given passage. This practice not only helps you in your Reading Comprehension, but also in your Analytical Writing Assessment.

91热爆 Reading Comprehension Practice suggestions

#2: Calling the Keywords!

Speed reading, in this case, would mean grouping words and reading the passage very quickly without paying too much attention to “the”, “and”, etc. In short, you have to just grab the essentials of the entire piece of passage rather than beating around the bush.

During speed reading, care should be taken that you identify the important keywords and highlight them. This helps you save those precious seconds of time.

91热爆 Reading Comprehension Example

#3: Bust the Myth!

Some aspirants believe that reading the questions even before reading the passage helps. But sadly it does not. In fact, this has proven to make you take longer to finish the RC question, since you end up reading the passage each time in light of the question. 听

Read the passage first and arrive at a gist.

Read the questions carefully and then read the passage a bit more keenly the second time to find the relevant answers.

This also helps you to visually track your answer in the passage.

[EXPERT WEBINAR]: How to Crack Tough RC Passages?
Understand how to find the main idea of a passage, the purpose of a passage, as well as speed reading techniques in just 60 minutes –

#4: Skim, Scan, & Solve

This is the ultimate speed reading technique that helps you solve RC passages well before the timer runs out.

SKIM: To quickly read the passage and grasp the underlying message, without stopping on words you are unfamiliar with (shorter phrases, bigger punch).

When should you use it?

  • Reading the passage for the first time.
  • To understand the key idea or objective of the passage.
  • To recheck the information provided after you have answered it.

91热爆 Reading Comprehension - Skim Passages

Having skimmed the above passage, you should have gathered an overall understanding of the passage including:

  • The topic
  • The main idea
  • Rough idea of the purpose why the passage is written
  • An idea of the flow of the passage (how the argument is built)
  • A few key ideas of the passage and their approximate location in the passage

SCAN: Now proceed to the questions and then search the passage for specific details pertaining to the question asked. This is essentially what scanning is about.

When should you use it?

  • Searching for a specific answer.
  • Finding a specific numerical data in a given passage.

Example:

Read the following question and try to answer it by going back to the passage that you just finished skimming!

Q. It can be inferred that the process described in the passage makes use of which of the following?

Winter has come. After 6 long seasons winter has finally come and it has brought the undead army along. With a race to the Iron Throne at hand 听and the Night鈥檚 King marching to the wall, the seven kingdoms is facing chaos in every direction..

With The King in the North gathering troops, the Mother of Dragons en route Westeros, Cersei plotting her devious schemes and Arya settling her scores, do the living have a chance of surviving the winter?

The main objective of this post is 听to portray a few fan favourite characters from the show by using one word which describes them the most. This is based on my perception 听of the characters.

Opinions may differ. 听听

1. Tyrion Lannister – 听Astute

Meaning: Shrewd

Usage: Tyrion’s astuteness has ensured he’s in the right side in the battle for the Iron Throne!听

The youngest of the Lannister trio, Tyrion is the personification of wit. The strongest weapon in the artillery of the fan favourite imp is his mouth. He has turned the tide in his favour with wit and tongue, innumerable times. 听If 听size really mattered the elephant would be the king of the jungle. So my money’s on the little lion for the run for the throne.

PS: You just cannot confront the man verbally unless you have access to burn ointment.

2. Arya Stark – 听听Retribution

Meaning: Vengeance

Usage: Arya’s grand entry at the beginning of season 7 has brought back old school retribution in style!

鈥淭he girl has a name, Arya Stark of Winterfell鈥 The last of the Stark girls was the reason for the many goosebumps for the viewers. From being a brash little tomboy to a vengeful warrior, Arya has come a long way. She opened the season in style and has started crossing out names on her kill list, sending a message and hinting that she has got her hands full for the season. 听Ned would be really proud of little daughter.

The Lone Wolf has begun her hunt.

3. Jon Snow – Exemplar

Meaning: Ideal model

Usage: Though Jon Snow is not the true heir to Winterfell, he is an examplar of a true King In The North

Jon had started out at the Night鈥檚 Watch as a steward and jumped all hurdles, took all the blows and gave his life (literally!) and went on to become the Lord Commander. He has won the hearts of millions of fans by being a living portrayal of his father’s principles . A wave of nostalgia hits when he unites all the 听men in the wall, wildlings and kings and forgives the traitors, reminding us of the honourable Ned Stark. The Lone Wolf doesn鈥檛 hesitate to give his life to save his pack.

Jon Snow is not the king the North deserves, but the king it needs right now.

4. Daenerys Targaryen – Emancipator

Meaning: Saviour

Usage: Daenerys emancipated the Unsullied army from their Masters and won many hearts.

The Mother of Dragons was treated as a slave by her own brother for his political interest. Daenerys Stormborn evolved from an innocent princess to a Khaleesi, to the Mother of Dragons and finally as the Saviour of Masses. From building her own army with a humongous fleet of 听ships to forming allies, Danny is an iconic character of the series. With people loving and supporting her and with three intimidating dragons, the Targaryen 听is on her way to reclaim her right to the throne.

Daenerys Targaryen is the reminder that dynamite comes in small packages.

5. Sansa Stark – Metamorphosis

Meaning: 听Evolution

Usage: From a proper lady to a fearsome Queen, Sansa Stark’s metamorphosis has been a difficult & cruel one. 听

Sansa Stark is a survivor. Surrounded by evil, she is the princess with a crown of thorns. In the initial seasons you just cannot see Sansa without tears in her eyes. Well, you cannot blame the girl, she lost her family, got married to monsters (with the exception of Tyrion), lived amongst people who plotted her death and destroyed her family and hometown. Now Sansa has transformed into a lady, with tears replaced by revenge and a resolve of a Queen and has helped her brother regain Winterfell. She now has her sights set on Cersei and the Seven Kingdoms. 听听

Sansa Stark is a sword forged in fires and taken the beatings only to become better and stronger.

5. Cersei Lannister – Domineering

Meaning; Ambitious

Usage: Cersei’s domineering nature and power-hungry antics cost her her children, family & people.

The dangerous combination of beauty, power and 听ambition sums up the Queen of Westeros, Cersei Lannister. She blew up the most religious site of King鈥檚 Landing and managed to kill thousands of citizens just to make sure she killed a few enemies . Losing her children to death, Cersei 听has become more heartless than ever. With the Mountain on her side and hatred and revenge fuelling her, Cersei is setting up the stage to face rivals approaching her from all sides.

The Mad Queen has taken up the reign.

7. Hodor – Benevolent

Meaning: Good Nature

Usage: Without a benevolent, protective caretaker like Hodor, it’s unlikely that Bran would have survived.

Hold the door. The words that changed our perspective of the Giant of Winterfell. Now, who would have ever thought there was a tragic past that changed the poor guy鈥檚 life forever? Even though the time traveller messed up his childhood, Wylie (Hodor) was willing to sacrifice his life for his little master, which he eventually did. 听The scene sure did 听make us shed a few tears.

Hodor was the unsung hero with a forgotten name.

8. Jaime Lannister – Diligent

Meaning: Dedicated

Usage: Despite being termed the ‘traitor’, Jaime Lannister has always been diligent in performing his duty to the Iron Throne & the people.

Jaime was Tywin Lannister鈥檚 prized trophy. Tywin put a lot of effort and thinking into the 听combat training and mental growth of the heir to the Casterly Rocks, which sure did not go a waste. Over the series we can hear people glorifying the skills of the Lannister hunk. From pushing a little kid from the window to waging wars, Jaime did it all for his love. 听He slowly evolved from an arrogant aristocrat to a noble warrior seeking a cause.

Jaime Lannister has the pride of a Lion and the heart of a doe.

9. Joffrey Baratheon – Abhorrent

Meaning: Despise

Usage: Though the benchmark for abhorrence has been long broken after Ramsay, Joffrey was one of the first members on the hate-list.

Joffrey can easily win the award for the most hated character of the entire series, hands down. The late king was hated by everyone alike from the time he was an ill 听mannered prince. The bravado pulled off dirty tricks one after the other that made the audience pray for his death. If Joffrey was on fire and I had a glass of water, I would use it for cleaning my shoe.

Joffrey is the undisputed king of hatesville.

10. Petyr Baelish – Deceitful

Meaning: Cunning

Usage: While we’re sure he has something up his sleeve, Littlefinger’s deceitful tactics are yet to be seen in the upcoming episodes in Season 7.

ImageCredits:https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=442813315&insideModal=1

Never trust Littlefinger (In case听you didn’t know, that鈥檚 his famous nickname). The guy made a statement himself! The infamous Petyr Baelish has a reputation for being as cunning as a fox. From deaths of Ned Stark and Lysa 听Arryn, to the sentence of Tyrion, Petyr played his cards right. The master of coin is 听a man with the a vast influence and hidden power and a tongue as sharp as a sword.

Littlefinger is a character of immense power hidden in the deepest of vaults.

I won’t name my favourite character out of the many. According to the rumor mill, favourites move on to rest in peace in this show.

Nevertheless, who’s your favourite Game of Thrones character? Comment and let us know!

Approximately 22 hours ago, Indian cricket fans were shocked – MS Dhoni retires as the captain of the ODI and T20 teams!

Millions of fans worldwide poured their love for Captain Cool with 鈥淭hank You鈥 messages, and why not?

MSD has single-handedly managed to change the face of Indian Cricket. Arguably one of the best captains Indian cricket has ever seen, he has brought glory to the nation in all forms of the game! He has shouldered the hopes and dreams of young & old alike without compromising on his team, his character or his performance.

Today, as he steps down, an entire nation pays tribute to the cricketer, leader, icon!

Joining thousands of others, here鈥檚 our list of 7 reasons why we love Mahi!

He is Equanimous!

i

Meaning: Ability to remain calm, even under difficult situations.

If there鈥檚 one person who comes to mind when you read that sentence, it鈥檚 MSD. Whether he鈥檚 chasing down an ambitious total, blasting sixes out of the stadium or even losing an easily winnable match, you will find him calm, composed and courteous!

He is Astute!

3

Meaning: The ability to quickly assess a situation and take a favourable decision.

For MSD, finding opportunities is like finding grains of sand on a beach! He thinks on his feet and his presence of mind on the field has helped us win matches, even under tough circumstances.

Do you remember the famous leg stump incident when the Rising Pune Giants took on the Kings XI Punjab? In what was an unorthodox yet highly effective move, Dhoni stopped a late cut with his right foot and prevented the ball from going past him!

He is Audacious!

GYI0050753586.jpg

Meaning: The willingness to take bold risks when necessary.

There鈥檚 something about big matches and Dhoni. You never know when he鈥檚 going to spring one on you! Talking about surprises, remember the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup? When millions sat in front of their TV screens, clutching their poor hearts in immense confusion and anxiety, Dhoni unleashed Joginder Sharma on the field. After the first wide, and the second 6, India was practically hyperventilating.

But after a quick strategy break, Joginder Sharma was able to clinch the most important wicket and win the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup for India.

Dhoni, you really pulled one on us there, buddy! Phew!

He is Nimble!

6)Nimble

Meaning: The ability to move quickly (physically).

Let鈥檚 just take a moment here and bow down to this God who runs between the wickets like his life depended on it! An interesting analysis on Quora reveals that Dhoni actually ran faster than Usain Bolt in one particular match against England in their 3rd ODI in 2006!

A captain who leads by example, he knows the importance of rotating the strike between the wickets and also pushes his team members to be equally fit and agile. Don鈥檛 believe me, take a look at the collective fielding marvels produced under Dhoni – Kohli, Jadeja, Raina鈥 even Yuvraj!

He is Discerning!

4)Discerning

Meaning: Having a keen sense of judgement.

April 2nd, 2011 – An out of form captain who barely scraped 150 runs in 8 matches promoted himself above a superbly performing player in a high adrenaline final! Normally, the outcome of such a story cannot be predicted to be favourable, especially for the captain. But, not when the captain is MS Dhoni.

With a breathtaking 91 not out against Sri Lanka, Dhoni confidently led the team to a glorious victory to make World Cup history! He not only won the final, he also won the hearts and respect of a cricket frenzy nation that is unforgiving and highly critical of its players!

He is Enterprising!

7 )Enterprising

Meaning: Displaying initiative and taking charge of a situation with limited resources.

In 2007, when the beloved Sourav Ganguly stepped down as captain of the Indian team, the mood of the entire nation was tense, uncertain and definitely apprehensive. Dhoni with his long locks and unconventional cricketing shots had just been appointed captain next. We didn鈥檛 know what to expect.

But 10 years later, there is only one voice – Thank you!

Indians stand together, proud & united in their praise for Dhoni, for he didn鈥檛 just a build a dynamic, youthful, aggressive team. He inspired millions of ambitious yet courteous fans who enjoy the spirit of the game without sacrificing their hopes for the team!

He is Pragmatic!

3)Pragmatic

Meaning: Adopting a practical and realistic approach.

A sign of a great leader is knowing when to pass the torch. After Virat Kohli鈥檚 roaring success as captain against England in the recent clash between the nations, Dhoni steps down from ODI & T20 formats as well, leaving behind a younger, fitter and equally ambitious captain to take on.

After registering the 5th consecutive win for India, who could question Dhoni鈥檚 decision to leave it in Kohli鈥檚 able hands?

Thank you, MSD – for听fulfilling our dreams, raising the bar and leaving behind big shoes to fill! You will be missed.

What are your favourite MS Dhoni moments?
